Is this one of the best games ever made, or what?

I've been bringing my disk-based games into work with me so that I can burn them all onto CD (disks are starting to fail!) and I threw this onto the work machine just now. Didn't work under Win2000 but the rather wonderful 3rd-party patch got it going in no time. And it hasn't aged a day - I've just played for an hour without blinking.

Wasn't there a rumour of a sequel some time ago? Or did I dream that?

Locomotion came out whihc was kind of a sequel. In so much as it used exactly the same ancient engine. And duly sunk without a trace.

A new version using the RCT 3 engine would be grand. Hop to it Chris.

More of the same but nicer on the eye and the AI for pathfinding is a bit better than the random drunken decisions of the previous incarnations vehicle drivers.

Worth it if the price is right. I got it for £15 preowned.

Prefer it to Sim City 4 as the focus away from the politics and power management and stuff and more on crashing trains, which is more my kind of thing.

That's not the proper sequel though, rather a German game ripping it off. It's actualy quite fun though, even if the delivery behaviour can be a bit shit.

D'ah. My bad. Got them the wrong way round. TG is fun though.

Locomotion is Transport Tycoon with the track and road building features of Rollercoaster Tycoon. This allows you build even more complex networks and even raised stations.

TTDPatch will only make the Windows version of Transport Tycoon Deluxe run in Win2000/WinXP. The DOS version cannot be made to run in these environments. The best thing about the patch is it allows you to tweak with tons of variables including the maximum number of vehicles allowed.

It's one of those games which you load up and then find yourself staring blankly at the screen 115 hours later, faint-headed from lack of food and hoping the dampness between your legs doesn't indicate an burst bladder.

I'm still waiting for some to make one of these games that isn't riddled with bug and which allows you to transfer goods from one form of transport to the other...

Rollercoaster Tycoon was soooo bad for that. A quick play on a Sunday afternoon always turned in to "..are you going to work today?" on a Monday morning :(

I really like Black & White as it had some cheeky code in it that would read the system clock and then tell you to go to bed if you were still playing in the early hours. FAF the first time.

Civ will always be the ultimate time-annihilator for me. The temptation to make it to one new tech, or worse, a new epoch, is always too much for me to resist. In fact, the last few weeks, I've been having the impulse to fire up a new game. Trying to resist, as I know that means at least 20 hours during which I could have been doing something else will be gone forever.

Maybe playing Pirates! right now isn't helping either. Something about a Meir game, should probably be factored into the TOE.

Indeed. I actually own THREE COPIES of Transport Tycoon. The original for DOS, the Deluxe version for DOS and the Deluxe version for Windows. Only paid full price for the first one, though. :-)

The small maximum values of TT always used to scupper me long before I'd had enough fun from my game. Using the patch to allow loads and loads and loads more vehicles and buildings should make the game potentially much, much longer.

And I still love the jazz soundtrack. It sounds much better on my work machine than it ever did on my crappy old Soundblaster at home.

When you build stations of different type next to each other they are part of the same station.

If you tell a vehicle to unload there and that station doesn't require that commodity then it'll be left there waiting for another vehicle to pick it up.

What bugs? The only ones I have seen are in the pathfinding for vehicle routing and AI building.

Well, those bugs:) Sorry, been years since I played it, I think with the stations I may actualy be bitching about TG.

Wouldn't a homebrew copy of this with a persistent world where humans were the competitors be great fun? Shoudln't be that tricky to balance time-online issues either.
