Hi, I'm looking to buy a new laptop, ideally something that would be able to handle Skyrim. I don't want a desktop as I travel a lot but I also dont want to spend thousands on an Alienware or similar machine. Any suggestions or am I living in a dreamworld? Thanks |
Budget laptop for games?

Laptops in general are not really meant for games. The ones that are capable of running games like Skyrim or Battlefield start at around £800. Alienware laptops tend to be overpriced and you can get similar specs notebooks for around £600. The thing you need is a discrete graphics card i.e separate card that handles graphics.
A desktop of similar price would wipe the floor with a laptop and last alot longer. I think unless you are willing to spend £800 you might wanna re think and consider PS Vita etc if u want portable gaming -

Yeah that looks quite nice. Piss poor webcam and battery life though. -

Registered 15 years agoI considered the Vita but I need a new laptop too and don't really want to buy two things but I guess if the price of a gaming laptop is similar to a vita and a general laptop then I may reconsider...
The inferno that was linked looks quite good I think, I dont know too much about graphics cards (its been over 5 years since I built a computer) though... -

Registered 15 years agoThe new 650 M will run most things you throw at it. Problem is that it can overclock itself and mainly cocks it up. Had one in a samsung laptop and would run most things on high and ultra for 15 minutes until it started to throttle due to heat issues. The new dells seem to also have this problem. Best off reading the reviews at notebookcheck.net. -

Registered 13 years agoPeople always say don't use laptops for gaming, but I have a bog-standard first-gen i3 Dell laptop with a Radeon graphics card that can play pretty much any modern game on medium settings. That cost me £450 over 2 years ago, so I'm quite sure you could get something very capable for around the £600 mark these days. Just don't expect it to run at 1080p/60fps - which of course the Vita doesn't get near either. -

Registered 16 years agoI read somewhere that the new intel processors with the integrated HD4000 can play skyrim reasonably in low settings.

bear in mind skyrim is a pretty low req game, i wouldnt try battlefield on it.
I have a laptop on which i do most of my pc gaming because i can use it on the sofa next to the mrs instead of in the study. it did cost over £900 though. -

Registered 11 years agoHigh jacking this thread as my laptop has just died.
Looking for a new one but I don't really have a clue about computers or parts etc.
Just need one that will run well for work and play WoW, Skyrim, etc reasonable well.
I saw about the nvidia 650M is pretty good, should I go for something with that in?? -
Don't think you're gonna find a budget laptop with a 650M in it.
In any case, go here, pick out the games you want to play and the GPUs you're thinking of, and it'll give you a good idea of what will work at different resolutions.
A bit more nosing about will find you laptops with your preferred GPU, and then you can look up prices.. -

Registered 16 years agoI have a laptop with the 640LE in it, which i overclocked to around 640 speeds.
It definitely handles most games on it at reasonable setttings. Been playing guild wars 2 on it. -

Registered 9 years agoI have a laptop with a 330m in it and it runs Skyrim, Batman AC, Sniper Elite v2, it struggles with games such as Arma 2 though.
I've seen i5 laptops with 6gig ram 500 gig HDD going new for 400 quid, not sure what GPU it has but I'm sure it wont be a shit one, I'm sure it was a Samsung as well. -

Registered 16 years agoYeah but the laptop was overpriced, you could easily get a thicker heavier one for a lower price. Plus that was a year ago, you could probably get the same for 500 -

You don't need a 800 quid laptop to run Skyrim. Skyrim ran fine on my 400 quid laptop. -

Registered 15 years agoI'd look at this. A 7670M will run most games decently.

I have both a desktop and a laptop. I spend more time gaming on the laptop even though i have to dial the settings down to medium or even low on some FPS's. Its just more convenient not to shut myself away in the study on my own.

Registered 9 years ago@THFourteen I have been keeping an eye on the tech, since the rumors of the steambox. The tech itself is still rather pricey, but I am sure that will change.
I would rather have a modular over a laptop, anyday! -

Any advise for a sub £400 laptop? Just something reliable that can run crusader kings 2, internet and office.
