I'm on the scrounge! I've finally got permission from my missus to build a MAME cabinet. Ideally I should be using a CRT monitor, but technically they are a pain in the arse, bulky and hard to get. So I'm going for an LCD monitor instead. I was looking at modern ones, but they are just about all wide screen - you are getting more width, which I don't need - 4:3 size is the best fit for the games, and means I can keep cabinet size down, which keeps the wife happy. I need a response time under 8ms (but I can look that up if you have a model number). So does anyone have an old 4:3 19" (or bigger!) LCD monitor knocking about? Happy to pay/have it picked up by courier! |
Anyone got an old 4:3 19 inch PC monitor spare?

"Permission from my missus" lol.
She wanted it in the garage, but I've managed to get into the house.
She must be picturing a sit down Star Wars cab, she can't see how it will fit...
As for CRTs...yup, to be authentic, probably...but they are such a pain in the arse. They can give you a massive electric shock - even unplugged they store a big charge. They are all getting old, are hard to ship around, big, heavy... I can use software to recreate the shitty picture, insert scan lines etcI know bugger all about electrics or woodworking, it's all pretty much a learning experience for me.

Registered 16 years agoI'm going up to the dump after lunch to have a poke about their electronics container (a big shipping container full of stuff). TV with a tube again...adding to the depth of the cabinet - I want slimline. But if I see something that looks reasonable I'll nab it.
Another issue with old CRT monitors/TVs is that when it conks out, they will be ever harder to replace than they are now. -

Could do, but it's still not the preferred option - I could block off the extra height I suppose.

This is a useful tool for comparing actual screen sizes. -

I can't be the only one tempted to take stuff away from the dump...?!
I should have learned my lesson, I brought home some glass bricks once, planning to incorporate them into a wall or water flume or something. Still sitting about, covered in moss, 10 years later... -

Registered 6 years agoI have a VERY old 19" 4:3 LCD monitor (beige, with stand, panel can be rotated to landscape or portrait) with both old-fashioned VGA and the then 'ultra-modern' DVI sockets (you might need a VGA or DVI cable though - not sure I still have that). When I say 'old' it really IS old!! In the day it was one of the earliest flat-panels to be made (an LG) and cost a fortune. Although "flat-panel" it's casing is still about two inches thick so doesn't look very modern now. But it still works like a charm with no faults, and if you're happy to arrange and pay for a courier to collect in UK, you are very welcome to it. It's just sitting in a cupboard gathering a lot of dust. Get in touch if you'd like it. -

Registered 12 years agoAlso, since you seem to be concerned with proportions, keep in mind that many 17" and 19" monitors were 1280x1024, which is not 4:3, but 5:4, which is ever so slightly higher. -

Registered 16 years ago@badwhippet - cheers, if I can't source one locally I may take you up on that!
@dominalien - yes, I've noticed that - many which claim to be 4:3 are 5:4. If I have to use that, I'm hoping to be able to output to the correct size. I just don't want a whole lot of empty screen.
No LCDs at the dump, but a few CRT TVs...still wary - I'm nervous enough about cutting all this wood, never mind degaussing a CRT. They sound dangerous! -
