Downloading was never just a fad. Well maybe in the mid 90's. From the late 90's it was pretty damn obvious where things were going. -

Maybe if you only listen to mainstream music, but there's always going to be plenty of niche stuff (especially foreign arists) that won't be available on streaming services.
In a roundabout way he's right. Give it another 5 years and people will all be streaming music. I don't have a single mp3 on my hard drive anymore. -
Downloading a 4mb mp3 on a 28.8k-56k modem wasn't much fun tbh. I was one of the first trials for NTL 512k in 98/99 but even then most websites still had midi versions as alternative downloads. -

I don't really know what counts as mainstream music. Chart music I guess? I only really listen to "Future World Music" or ambient background stuff that I've no idea what the genre even is ( https://soundcloud.com/dep/sets/within-the-darkness ).

Between that and channels like SuicideSheep on youtube, I don't see the point in having mp3s anymore. -

I'd disagree. Mobile data will go teh same way SMS data has in the next 5 years. I use Spotify on my mobile almost every night (albeit on wifi). But that's only because 3G is shite.
It wasn't so long ago SMS was the most expensive way to send data. If I've sent 5 text messages this year I'd be surprised. -

No silly, I was alluding to the wireless revolution that is gonna hit us like a metaphorical tidal wave in the near future.
So people are going to stop having there own personal music selection because they can listen to the radio? -

Or yeah - alternative to cheaper mobile data is wider accessible public Wifi.
I struggle to see it /not/ happening. -

Kind of, the supermarkets took the AAA title purchases from HMV as they would always negotiate a better deal, it's rare for one of the big titles to not be sold at cost or as a loss leader in a supermarket. HMV and the like could no longer rely on a bump from those sales as they couldn't afford the loss on each unit.
As I understand it, it's actually the supermarkets that have totally fucked the likes of HMV and Game, not online retailers.
I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of it is also related to the costs of building leases, their flagship stores would be costing an absolute fortune to maintain. -

Registered 13 years agoGiven that mobile voice coverage is still not universal, it'll be a while until mobile data is a viable alternative for local storage. Some people may not want subscription costs, either. -

*ok one time while iCarly was on, but it was the episode where she snacks on a retarded whim so it's understandable. -

So instead of having a device with your music library on, you'd rather pay a monthly charge to access it via WiFi?

Registered 13 years agoI have spotify on my phone and ipad and it lets me downlaod all the music i want for off-line listening. you just have to log in once per month.
i'd much rather that and pay £9.99 a month and get to listen to tonnes of different stuff -
The popularity of subscription based on demand streaming services in the last few years has proven people are willing to pay for a viable instant alternative. Rather than everyone with access to generictorrentdotcoms being a filthy pirate.
Regardless, DMCA's are everywhere now. I'm too old for chasing stuff around. -

I have a couple of devices that have all my music/video/apps on, without the need to stream wirelessly. If you are willing to pay to access stuff you have bought, then be my guest! -

Public wifi is arse though. The experience in terms of connecting is a ballache, and is mostly tied into another contract elsewhere - whether mobile, Sky, Virgin etc. 4G will make most public wifi redundant imo. Agree that it will happen, but won't be mass market for a good 4-5 years.
Or yeah - alternative to cheaper mobile data is wider accessible public Wifi.

On the move I use itunes match, have around half my library on the phone, when it comes to a song that isn't on my mobile it streams and saves over 3G. It's definitely the way it's going, what with amazon and google rival services. -

Registered 12 years agoChrist guys, I'm talking about next year or something. But give it a decade (same time frame as that HMV meeting till now) and every device you have will be able to access the Internet, whether that be through wifi or 3G or magic.
If you don't like it, then fuck off to Mars. It'll be a penal colony by then anyway. -

That's an interesting one. Moving to an entirely streaming-only media delivery model is not just a technological issue, but also a political one. We can have our 12G mobile devices or whatever, but the desire to break the world up in to little chunks doesn't seem to be going away, or is solvable by wireless technology.
And what happens if you can't get a decent mobile signal? Or you're abroad? -
While the digital landscape was a little ten different ten years ago, it's still a massive failure to not adjust for where it was potentially headed, even more so when you're paying experts to tell you where it's heading only for you to go "nah, bollocks, downloading will never catch on".
It astonishes me how companies like Kodak, Sony and now major retail outlets have filed to see the writing on the wall with regards to digital. Their demise is exactly what they deserve. -
Yeah, but I thought USB wouldn't catch on so I can't be too disparaging (what's wrong with RS232?)
