Evening all. Just discovered my old CD-ROM copies of these games and got all nostalgic. I dearly want to play these again but am having issues. I've been to the Adventuresoft site and downloaded the patches in preparation as I have XP rather than Windows95/98. Only problem is that even when I follow the instructions from the site, I can't get the game to install. Here's what they say. "If you can’t install Simon the Sorcerer 2 at all: 1) Install the game in the following way :- a. Put the game CD in your drive. If an error message appears, just click OK. b. Click your Start button, then click RUN. c. In the dialog box that appears, enter D:\setup.exe (where D is the letter of your CD drive) and press enter. d. Proceed through the installation in the usual manner. Choose NOT to run the game at the end of the installation. 2) When the game has installed completely and the setup program has closed, DOUBLE-CLICK the patch file you downloaded earlier to run it. 3) Follow the on-screen instructions. When prompted, make sure you enter the path where your version of Simon the Sorcerer 2 is installed. The default for this is C:\Program Files\AdventureSoft\Simon the Sorcerer II, and this path is entered automatically. 4) Click ‘Unzip’ to extract the files, and then click ‘Close’ to exit the patch installer. 5) Run the game from the Start Menu (under the AdventureSoft program group). The game will not run if you let the CD autoplay." I get an error message on screen that says: Windows cannot find 'D:\Setup.exe'. Make sure you types the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search. I've done this but there is no such file on the disc. Anyone have any ideas?? Would very much appreciate it. |

The fantastic ScummVM interpreter supports both these games and comes in various flavours.
A lot of people have had huge problems getting graphic adventures like these running on XP, and that's what I'd recommend

That means that there isn't a setup file on the root dir, it'll be in a folder. Explore the CD and find it yourself.

Mate, I appreciate the input but I'm not so thick that I didn't think of that ;o)
Although I am clearly thick enough to incorrectly spell the word 'thick'!

Registered 18 years agoM-H, Retroid. What's the deal with this thing? How does it work, what do you need to do etc? I'm really only a console gamer so am scared of patches etc that don't come from Xbox LIVE and do all the work themselves! -

Registered 19 years agoSCUMMVM is something very magical indeed. I just wished they'd add support for the Legend of Kyrandia... -

Got 'em.
This is the list of files you need from each game to copy to your hard drive. Just create a drawer called 'Simon1' or something and pop 'em in there then point SCUMMVM towards it. The game should pop up in the list of games to play.
Here's an FAQ which hopefully answers any other questions you might have

Off-topic, but does Sam & Max Hit The Road have sound? I've started playing it again but there ain't sound. Would ScummVM sort it out? -

Registered 18 years agoYes, it has sound. Speech even, and pretty good sound at that.
Scummvm will most likely help you as well. -
Also, Maniac Mansion and Broken Sword 1 don't work either. BS1 says something about memory. -

Registered 18 years agoMe again! Well, believe it or not, as I was browsing in a local game store, they had Simon 1&2 (the new updated XP compatible editions) for a tenner. I splurged... financially, not the other way.
Installed, all good. Only thing is, the entire game screen seems to be shifted about an inch to the left. By this I mean there is a. inch black border down the right hand side, and an inch is missing down the left hand edge! Any way to shift it over??
Should have gone to Specsavers, or used SCUMM I guess... I was scared about using it

Someones set up LucasFan games who have made their own maniac mansion that's quite good. They also have made a few other games. Just click on our games to get to it.
My first attempt at a link, so I hope it works. -
