I think I'm going to have to test the various options. Some good ideas here. A phone stand sounds sensible . I will test the 15 year old external webcam and see how it looks. I'm well aware of the difficulty of angling a phone so the camera doesn't point up your nose. Fortunately it's a talk only interview. No presentation required. It's also with the organisation I already work for so that should make it easier. I will most likely be fully dressed. I may not wear shoes.
For an interview I'd spend more time making sure the microphone and speakers are configured properly.

I'm sure we've all been on loads of calls where someone is using a different device for their speakers and you get a horrible echo which cuts into the audio of whoever is speaking.

Also you want to make sure you can hear the questions clearly, and they can hear your answers through your microphone.

After a year of messing about with various Bluetooth devices of varying expense and all the problems that come with wireless connections, I've reverted to some decent quality wired earphones with a CVC mike and they're clearer than anything else.

And hopefully goes without saying, but make sure you set up your config in Zoom/Teams/Google whatever and ideally do a test run with someone well ahead of time, and for the interview itself get ready 10/15 mins in advance to deal with any technical issues (I had a Windows update hit me 5 mins before an interview...).

And most importantly, don't be shit. Good luck!

Yeah, I use a mix of airpods and wired iPhone headphones and have been getting a few "can you adjust your mic" kind of complaints recently, but just don't give enough of a fuck about my job to actually do anything about it.

Definitely getting a proper mic and actually making an effort when I start my job search in earnest though.

    Good luck btw!

@challenge_hanukkah I once freed one stuck in a chicken wire fence. Neither of us enjoyed it

I used to see adders all the time when I was a kid (our dog got bitten by one) but it's been a very long time since I've seen one, and I'm out in rural places all the time. I see grass snakes out on the track sometimes, the retained warmth of the rails attracts them.

    Fuckloads of feral mink though.

I haven't seen adders or grass snakes in years.

Used to see them loads as a kid, especially adders, as the used to sun themselves on the dunes where I used to play.

Grass snakes can grow pretty big too, my dad ran one over when I was small and it was over a metre long. A quick Google says they can grow upto 1.5m which is a pretty big snake, especially for the UK.

Kids used to catch a lot of slow worms too, but again, haven't seen one in at least 30 years.

Loads of slow worms near me, including in my garden. The cats love them. :-/

I remember some animal rights loonies freeing all the mink from a local fur farm and the little bastards devastated the local wildlife.

    @Trowel

I hadn't considered the speakers. Thanks for that. I will test out my chosen setup with someone else before the interview. Phone will be a backup as my internet might drop.

I tell E-on about 6 months ago that they need to increase my direct debit as I'm not paying enough. They attempt a meter reading to get it right (it's a smart meter, so obviously doesn't work), except because it's a smart meter, they can't. Because they don't work.

So I keep giving them the meter reading, so they can sort their shit out. I even got a nice email from them saying how good it was that I'm trying to balance out the supply/funds.

And now they're screaming at me saying I owe them loads of money.

Fucking clueless. Every business is fucking clueless.

First beer of the year today, took my lad for a scoot/ride into town and had a cheeky pint at the beach side bar, spent many a Saturday/Sunday last year doing similar throughout the summer, I should point out that there's usually an hour or three of scooting/park messing about prior to any refreshments, looking forward to a similar summer .....

I have the opposite of a blood clot problem. Woke about 3 hours ago with what I thought was a snotty runny nose.
Turns out it was a nose bleed. All over the bed sheets, duvet, pillow, carpet.

Sitting here with tissue up my nose not able to sleep. Happy days!

Unfortunately not as I do like that part of the country - this was up near Stoke - God's Armpit of the Country.

I got a 1% one which supposedly covers CPIH. Have a feeling it's going to come nowhere close to that over the coming year though thanks to good old Brexit.

I have survived my nosebleed it would seem. Thanks for all the messages of support. Really helped me through.
I can now smell the future.

Also - its 10 years this October since I was made redundant. It was 3 years before that since a pay rise.
So in real terms a fairly substantial pay drop.

My pay (gross) dropped 20% last year. :(

In fairness though, I'd had 5 years of increases so I'm not going to whine too loudly.
