100%! Really good balance between learning and Sunday afternoon chat! I love it!

Natural Histories is good on R4 as well. They're all on the Sounds app. I've started looking at Pigeons in a new light recently.

I just had a missed call from a phone number that is almost the same as mine, but where the last 2 digits are 11 instead of 88. Quite odd. I rang it back from my other phone, assuming it would be some kind of tech support scam or HMRC telling me I was about to be arrested (like normal) but it went to some random bloke's voicemail. I'm still thinking it was a scam but how does that work? Can they clone existing numbers that are in use already?

I don't think it's about cloning but about spoofing, which is supposedly trivial.

Ah OK, maybe that's what I meant. So they spoof a number very similar to your own to make you curious about it.

I think mobile operators get assigned blocks of numbers so a scammer can work out a scam list of a ton of people on vodafone, sky, whatever. Ive kept my number across three (four?) networks so I occasionally get spams claiming to be from Virgin.

Its why the broadband scams work so well. A lot of people get phone and BB tied up so theres a decent chance of them calling a Sky assigned landline number and the person also having sky broadband that now mysteriously has a fault.

So, yeah, if you get someone pretending to be from your actual supplier, they havent sold your details, its just process of elimination.

Another call, again the number the same as mine apart from the last 2 digits (different number this time but same deal). It was the national crime blah blah blah I'm about to be arrested etc.

Unfortunately, my work phone has been directed to my mobile so I have to answer them.

This is me. And I'll never check the landline if it rings.

Must have missed out on hundreds of dates from hot, single women in my area.

As above, literally the only people who ever called my landline were broadband scammers, so I just unplugged the phone.

I just had Virgin Media call me up - when I asked, knowingly, if this was really Virgin I got told to Shut the Fuck Up so probably was them.

It could be a beautiful woman randomly calling.

It hasn't been in over a decade but one day!

My mum will only call my landline. She won't call me on the mobile in case I'm out :-/
(and I don't have caller ID - my phone is all old fashioned hipster)

Yeah, if it wasn't for my mother, I wouldn't have a landline plugged in either.

We had that with my gran and my father-in-law. They both got used to it quick enough when it was that or nothing.

I binned my landline the other week and swapped my mum's phone contract to have inclusive mobile minutes. She still forgets and asks me every time if it costs her to ring mobiles...

I dont know whether the pensioners in my family are particularly savvy but since we hoofed the landline, they just video call over messenger rather than ringing.

Maybe its because they think they will be charged a fortune to actually call, now you mention it...

My mum doesn't own and can't work a mobile (despite them effectively being the same as DECT phones) and doesn't want the interwebs (or W W W dot as she tells anyone who dares suggest she does something online). She is 83 though, so I'll give her a pass.

My Mum was appalled when I let slip that I'd bought some weed off the internet.
I think she'd have been less concerned for my safety if I'd ran away and joined Islamic State.
