So how about we bring the badger and fox cull forward? Kill two birds with one stone (then add those birds to the fox mince and badger burgers) -

Going to the effort of mincing cats, dogs, rats etc would be too much effort, especially as the horse meat was so cheap.

ahh, the old tippex out horse and write cow eh? clever bastards. incidentally i once owned a mincing cat. kept himself to himself and was very good to his mother but refused to use the litter tray until i splashed strong cologne all over it. -

Funny how when asked, no-one wants to eat horsemeat, but they buy it blindly in a supermarket. -
I want to eat horsemeat. I want the burgers I used to buy, back in the freezer section but relabelled to make it clear they're horse. They were tasty so I want them back. All they do now is Birdseye and they don't taste as nice. -

The entire horsemeat scandal, (and the 'pink slime' one before it), reminds me of the following excerpt from Scott Adams' book The Dilbert Principle (page 138):
Marketer #1: "You and I might prefer beef in our hamburgers, but the average consumer isn't that discriminating."
Marketer #2: "I heard of a guy who eats light bulbs and nails."
Marketer #1: "Exactly. They don't care what they eat."
Marketer #2: "So we could fill our burgers with lawn clippings and toenails and that kind of [expletive deleted] and they'd never know the difference."
Marketer #1: "They might even thank us for saving them money."
Marketer #2: "I'm exhausted from all of this market analysis. You want to get a steak?"

Every butcher I have used currently and in the past, I check and ask them how they source their meat. In some cases, I have found out that some butchers sell hung meat (drained of blood). Only by talking to the butcher will you find these things out, and on the whole I am a sociable guy so it's never a problem to strike up a conversation on the fly when shopping.
This is the very thing I detest most about supermarkets, no friendly banter to gauge the person you are trusting when buying foodstuffs from. Its a sad world indeed when people shuffle into a supermarket, pick up a box, shuffle to the checkout and queue in silence then briefly smile as they hand over their cash.

Registered 16 years agoIn my old butcher, if you asked for lamb chops they'd pull out half a spine of lamb and cleave it into chops in front of you, then tidy them up and bag them. God help you if the person in front of you asked for a rack of lamb, cos that takes an absolute age to butcher.
These days I go to the butcher across the road most often, as they're a little less snooty there, and they do more varieties of sausages. They do most of their butchering in a room at the back though. -
