Well, I got my brand new Compaq 3970 set up last night, and spanking though it is, I'm well aware that I am not making very good use of it.

What doesn't help is that lack of any real instructions other than a starter guide, and I can't even seem to find any online. So, I'm a bit stuck as to how I actually do anything useful/non office related on it.

I've synched it all up with outlook and the calender and all that jazz, but I want games and porn for god's sake, not spreadsheets!!

So, I tried ScummVM, as I have all of the Lucasarts games, and just couldn't work it out. Any chance of a link to some sort of idiots guide? Failing that, anyone got any really basic hints and tips?

    Cheers.

    Re: Scumm...

Before you run the engine, you need to put the game's datafiles in a
directory. The filenames must not be in mixed case on *nix systems
(for example, these are valid names: "monkey2.000", "MONKEY2.000", while
this is a bad one: "Monkey2.000"). If you use a game with speech, the file
monster.sou must reside in the same directory as the datafiles.

Please note that by default, ScummVM will save games in the directory
it is executed from, so you should refrain from running it from more than
    one location.

ScummVM can be launched directly by running the executable. In this case,
the in-built launcher will activate. From this, you can add games (click
'Add Game'), or launch games which have already been configured.

You'll have to navigate to the exe using file explorer as it doesn't seem to appear in the programme menu for some reason.

list of files to copy per game

OK. Total n00b question, but when you talk about putting things in my directory, is it really as simple as copying and pasting them into the "shared files" folder. or do I need to do something a bit more complicated.

Also, I assume its the palm version of ScummVM I need to be downloading.

To be honest if I can just get some point and clicks working on it and a little bit of filthy porn, I'll be happy :)

Bill (sorry, I can't find your other thread) I've just thought of something else you may want to include.

I've used Resco File Explorer (recommended on your site I think) and mapped a directory on my PC over my wireless network. The result is that I can stream movies over my wireless network to the Pocket PC anywhere in the house. Very cool.

Building on that, there's the other application that Rhythm recommended (I can't remember the name right now, but I have it at home) which I've used to stream movies from PC to PC. I seem to remember that the documentation said something about streaming signals on the fly to Pocket PC devices. So you could basically hook it up to a Sky Box or TV Tuner and stream TV to your Pocket PC wirelessly.

I'm rebuilding my server this week and setting this up - I'll let you know how it goes if you're interested.

OK cool. I'll give that a whirl when I get back. Good stuff. Much appreciated Bill, very kind of you.

That wireless streaming stuff sounds superb. I'll definitely keep an eye out to see how that turns out.

No. I struggled with it for ages last night, and got fed up and gave up. I was going to trawl through the ScummVM forums this afternoon to see if I could find a FAQ or something.

I got it on ok, and I thought I had put the relevent files in the relevent directory as it advised, but when I click on the .exe, it just gives me a message about not being able to find the path or something.

I did get some of those free games from the link working easily enough, which is quite cool, but it's no Monkey Island.

Strange, I managed to get ScummVM working first time. I'm not bragging, I just didn't see any stumbling blocks, so I'm curious as to where you went wrong.

    Me too :)

Maybe I over complicated it a bit. In the read me there was all this stuff about putting all the files in a directory named after a compatible game, and removing files with mixed case letter and all this. When I get home I'll post the exact message I got when I clicked on the exe.

I pissed about with it for ages though and got the same message every time. Pretty much out of ideas.

Is there something I would need to download first to get it working maybe?
  • Deleted user 19 January 2005 23:44:14
Right. Now that I've got the thing working again, the message I get when I try and run Scumm is "Cannot find 'scummvm' or one of its components. Make sure the path and filename are correct and all the required libraries are available."

    Abso-fucking-lutely fucking su-fucking-perb!

Got it working. A huge thank you to Bill Door, deem and Mikes. Point and clicks have never looked or felt so good. These things were made for Pcoket PCs! I can't wait for a nice long train journey :)

    Excellent!

What scummvm games haven't you played yet? Or are you just going for revisiting the old classics?
  • Deleted user 20 January 2005 08:54:13
I never actually played the original Monkey Island for some reason, so I'm playing that. Plus replaying DoTT as it's one of my favorite games ever.

Got a few I haven't played though. Never really got through Full Throttle or The Dig in their entirety, and I've never played Broken Sword 2 at all. So there's plenty for me to be getting on with. I can really see it becoming my main gaming platform for a while.

Compact Flash or SD? How much at Dabs?

I'm sure I got my 1gig MMC card (SD Compatible) from Ebay for about £50, and that was a while ago, so they should be cheaper now.

Shit, sorry to keep on noobing out with this, but what would you recommend? I was looking at this.

Hmmm, £55 seems a bit expensive.

    Have you considered ebay?

    [MH]
  • Deleted user 20 January 2005 11:52:19
That item you've linked to isn't listed anymore or something, but you're right, they are better value there. Normally can't be arsed with ebay for "normal items", but I might give it a whirl. Ta again.

I normally can't be bothered, but I got mine from Ebay using "buy it now" and was quite happy with the result and the saving. Basically they ship them from the US so they're a bit cheaper.
