| Anyone know what good specs would be for CS: S? Or to run it at an acceptable rate even if it looks like CS1? And, is there any way to get it without having HL2? |

Registered 19 years agoYou need HL2. As for the spec, HL2 is surprisingly forgiving, if you can run HL2 then you can run CS:S - so check out the HL2 minimum system requirements.

It scrapes it.
1.2 Ghz Processor = 1.5 Ghx Processor
256MB RAM = 256MB RAM
Direct X 7 enabled card = Nvidia GeForce2 MX 200 32MB
Windows 98 = Windows XP
Mouse = Optical Mouse
Keyboard = Keyboard
Internet connection = 300K NTL connection
Good enough to run CS: S? Would you buy it just for CS, since HL2 couldn't be played. -

Registered 20 years agoIf would just about run on that but it would be very sluggish with only 256Mb of RAM. -
Won't bother then. Looks like I'll just have to stick with Condition Zero and UT2K3 then. Bah. -

I've got plenty of money at the moment. I might just leave the PSP/DS and upgrade the computer a bit. What could I get on a budget of £300? -

Eh... How much is that? Bear in mind I might need a new processor and more RAM as well. -

Registered 17 years ago£300 will get you 512mb fast ddr, a decent motherboard and a 2800+ AMD 64. Might even be enough left for a second hand ATI 9600

But what about the graphics card? Is a 2800+ AMD 64 good for HL2 (It'll be one of the games I play most. HL1 is my fave game ever)? -

Registered 20 years agoA 2800+ AMD 64 should keep you going for quite some time, I use a 3200XP Barton and that's fine for HL2 and it's a slower 32 bit chip. -

My specs are
2800+ AMD64
512MB 2700 DDR
SATA 80GB hard disk
9700 Pro
I can run HL2 at 1024*768 (highest res my TFT will go to) and barely get a stutter with everything turned on except for AA -

Registered 18 years agoYeah I'm quite keen to get better performance for CS:S, -possibly Battlefield 2, F.E.A.R, chronicles of Riddick etc, I've decided to go for a set up for a decent upgrade path-
Athlon 64 - skt 939 - hopefully one of the new cooler ones
Asus nforce 4 motherboard - with PCI express, whatever is the latest on the day I buy
either X800XL or Geforce 6800 GT
I think it will have to be PCI express because this generation of graphics cards is probaly the last that will be AGP, and I tend to get a new graphics card every year -
don't get me wrong CS:S runs ok on my AthlonXP 2000/500mb/9800 pro, but it could be better especially on that tides map that came just came out- pretty map that is -

300Gig HDs are now around a hundred quid+VAT, that should keep you going for a while.

I'm thinking £400 ish, when I come to buy it all - X800XL's look like they'll be a good price - £200 maybe ? and for that you get the full 16 pipes or is a 6800 GT better..shivoa? -

Good enough to run CS: S? Would you buy it just for CS, since HL2 couldn't be played.
Yes. You could run it. Using the 'dxlevel 70' launch option and with a few other config tweaks, you could probably get around 25-30fps, and YES, graphically it would look like 1.6! But it would run. And if CS-S can be run, HL2 could also, using the same tweaks.
