Imagine an Apple made iOS map.
Can you see that richly textured leather trim around the screen? The fake stitching? Or how about those glassy buttons looking like they've been polished using the same shoe cleaner that Ives put on his scalp.
That is the opposite of Google Now.
Which is the genius of it. Much like Win 8 "Metro" look before it they've intentionally looked at everything apple does design wise (in software) and gone to the oposite end.
So Apple are cock blocked. Either they stick with their horrible trompe-l'œil look or they end up aping MS and Google. -

Widgets are ultimately fucking pointless though. -

Shortcuts aren't needed if you have an intuitively designed os and the speed to make it run. Which might explain why I use them a lot on my phone and tablet. -

What shitty functionality would that be? Personally I find Android to be years ahead of iOS.

OS specific stuff now.
Shortcuts
Homescreens I can do whatever I want with
How sharing works between apps
Lock screen widgets
The fact that third party devs can make apps like Swype or SwiftKey
That Google Maps show public transport directions (unfair of me to add this)
The way the notification center works
The only advantage iOS has (IMO) is some better third party apps. But the OS it self?

Anything else?
I'm not saying iOS is rubbish btw. I just think it's a year or two behind Android (and Win8 and BB) feature wise. I also doubt Apple will be able to close that gap since they seem hell bent on moving in the opposite direction AND lack the developers to do anything about it. -

You right, it was unfair of me to add that since it's not an OS level feature. It will be interesting to see if Google adds it to their iOS app or if 2013 will indeed be the year of system lock in like Bruce Sterling said.
One thing: "That Google Maps show public transport directions" is down to Google bothering to add it to their app on iOS, surely. Not an issue of iOS development by Apple, I don't think.
That Launch Center app does look like it adds some much needed functionality to iOS. -

not the lockscreen, but the home screens
@THFourteen So widgets are things that clutter up, sorry, appear on your lock screen?
I'm not sure what the incredible difference is between having that on a lockscreen and just unlocking the phone and popping open SimpleNote from the dock, where I have all that info and more...
Seriously, though, are they just thingies on the lockscreen?
as an example, if I want to check whether the jubilee line is running, I unlock my ipad, find the tube app in its folder, load up the tube app and click on jubilee line.
if i want to do the same on my android phone, you unlock the phone and glance at the screen.
obviously theres a limit to how many widgets you can have on one screen, before you have to start swiping left or right to go to other screens. for example my twitter feed takes up a whole screen on its own, and its two swipes to get to that screen. Is there much difference between that and iOS where you have to open up the twitter app? probably not.
