My Cousin has a little problem. His monitor isn't turning on at all, it's stuck in standby mode... Turning on the PC doesn't help.

    Ideas?

Throw it down the stairs and claim it on the insurance....but on a more serious note does it respond when pressing whatever button it is to run his computers setup at the start up?

First thing I asked. He says he's unplugged it, replugged it and rescrewed it back in. No effect.

Homer: No. Nothing. It's STUCK in standby.

I heard some good hardware advice recently... What was it?

Ah, yes. "Buy a new monitor".

    ;)

Sounds like it's not receiving a signal from the Gfx card - is that cable in both ends? Has he done something to his graphics settings recently (bumped up the res to silly levels, updated the drivers?)

He says the cable is in correctly.
Didn't think about the res or drivers, I'll check. It's doubtful, but I'll check.

Okies, I was just wondering as I had a similar probelm once and pressing F8 just after the start up let me go into the setup screen where I reset the monitor settings and the screen resolution. But seeming as that doesn't do any good in his case, I think he'd be better off going with Hicksy's idea. :)

It's a fairly low spec PC, and doesn't run anything intensive. Most powerful game he runs is Red Alert 2 and the Internet, so I'm not WHY it'd go bang...

    Anyway of checking?

Have you taken it out and tested it on another machine?

Yeah - put in a different video card or try a different monitor.

one of my machines got a bit flakey like this once. i'd recommend talking the lid off. unplug everything, all the cards, drives and whatnot, maybe even the memory if you wann be picky (i never did that). pop out the cmos battery to clear everything and leave it out for a few seconds to allow any residual power to disipate. then put together the minimum system to get a screen up - cpu, memory and video card and nowt else should do it. see if you get anything up then. if you don't then something's certainly borked, most likely the graphics card so look into swapping bits out.

and be sure to fully reseat the card, don't just leave it there as it could be something dodgy with the connection.

it's a bit long winded and hassleful, but as i said, it has worked for me when i've had the exact same issue.

No other machine to test the card on and no other monitor to test with the machine.
Cable IS secure at both ends. Res and drivers haven't been touched for 2 weeks, and in that 2 weeks it's been running fine.

Has it given it a good whack with the palm of the hand. Try different parts of the monitor as well. Also try shouting at it, is helpful if there are no children about, as swearing whilst shouting is better.

Can he still get the monitor settings displayed on the monitor? or is it one of those archaic plastic wheel type devices?

What colour is the monitor's LED
