Just thought I'd let anyone that doesnt already know that the Nook Simple touch is going for £29.00 all over the show, not least on their offical website I've got a Kindle but a lot of reviews say these are better, with more font choices , expandable memory and a longer battery life. Oh, and you can root them as well and play megadrive games in monochrome with a shit refresh rate |

I'm tempted to get one for my wife to use...

Registered 13 years agoReally, since when? Reviews are pretty good, so why would anyone stump up more than double for a Paperwhite? -
Saw this in the bargains thread, cracking deal.
Ordered mine through John Lewis and I'm getting 6 months broadband free, which is just icing on the cake. -

Registered 20 years agoQuite tempted by the Nook HD+, being able to root it and it's got a memory card slot for the current price is pretty nice. -

Registered 13 years agoMy Simple Touch has apparently been dispatched today. I already have a Kindle 3rd Gen and, although that's bulkier, I'm still expecting to stick with it as a primary reader. The Amazon store seems way better than the Nook's and the epub format that the Nook uses seems less popular than the mobi format (which the Kindle can read) for "otherwise acquired" books.
Might try modding it to run Kindle software or some other mobi reader. Not too crazy about the idea of Androidifying it though. If anyone has some tips, please post them. -

Calibre and a couple of DRM-management plug-ins will let you move all your kindle content across.

Yeah, fuck it. Probably a hell of a lot easier to convert .mobi to .epub using Calibre than hack Kindle software onto the device. I expect it will run a lot more smoothly that way too. Shame it won't have bookmark sync though.
As far as I understand it, you can't email files to the Nook like you can with the Kindle. You have to whip out the USB cable to put your own stuff on. Can anyone confirm?

Registered 13 years ago@Murbal Wow, that's surprising. I once used USB to load a 1gb library of books on to my Kindle 3rd gen. Given that it has a 4gb capacity, I was pretty surprised to find that it ran slow as molasses with that many books on. I factory reset the device and now just use the Amazon Store or email specific books to it when I want to read them. You can find your Kindle's email address in your account section on Amazon. -

Generally, yes. It varies if you have multiple kindles though.

It was probably indexing them. Usually takes a few hours if you're mass-dumping stuff on the device, but sometimes the "acquired" books have internal metadata problems and it gets hung up on them for a lot longer.

Incidentally, Send to Kindle works a lot smoother than emailing directly, especially if you have multiple devices - http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/?nodeId=200768410 -

Registered 13 years agoAmazon will convert other files formats and send them via email to you as we'll. I've done it with a few PDFs. My nook has shipped, ill have a mess around with it mainly because I'm a sucker for a bargain. If user reviews are anything to go by it may end up replacing my kindle 5 although I'm not convinced by touchscreen ereaders, I like to have my thumb on the screen while lying on my side, with the iPad it's constantly flicking pages. -

Registered 14 years agoWell, just bought one, I prefer physical books but at this price it would be stupid not to; Kindle on my Galaxy Note ends up killing the battery, at the end of the day, so an e-ink device is a better solution. -

I wonder if you can disable the touchscreen while reading, as it does also have physical page-turn buttons.

I didn't know about Send to Kindle. Do you know if it can send .mobi files? They aren't in the list of supported files in the link.

Yep, works fine with .mobis. I use it all the time. -

Cool..ordered myself one of these. Always wanted an ereader but could never justify the price, plus it looks fairly simple to root and playing around with that kinda thing is fun.
