This is excellent news. Be interesting to see what comes out over the next few months news wise.

Just give me a DICE-made Battlefront. That's it.

As others have said, LucasArts have hardly been making good games in recent times so EA / their production studios, can't really do any worse.

1313 looked(s) ace so if that and a Dice FPS make it to market then this is fantastic news for me.

Oh and it has to be an FPS (Battlefield - Star Wars or Battlefront 3) from Dice doesn't it? I can't imagine a Jedi's Edge (well actually I can but I doubt it'd be very good) or anything and their driving games (could a Star Wars universe, vehicle racing game work?) are 10+ years old now.

Well at least EA should know what they're doing with the license.

    I'll take a Battlefield Star Wars/Battlefront 3 from DICE

KotOR 3 from Bioware or Obsidian (if they're given time to finish it)

And if there is any of Westwood left at EA a C&C Star Wars from them.

BF was mainly 3rd person the 1st person view was pretty poor and didn't fit the pace of the game that much outside of vehicles (and even then Pandemic dropped the cockpit views for 2) so I'd be upset if they turned into another bloody FPS. Not surprised, but upset.

Racing games have already worked well with the awesome Racer with the Pod racers (Phantom Menace was worth it for that game alone), I doubt you could do any other kind of racer though you are right. Mind you a AT-AT race sounds fun.
:) an AT-AT race might be.... tedious.

While there are certainly enough vehicles in the Star Wars universe to make a racing game, the challenge would be to make a Star Wars game and not just a generic Space Ship game.

If you take the Iconic Star Wars ships, then there are only really five or six that instantly say 'Star Wars'. Beyond that, you're getting into muddy waters where the average person won't recognize the vast majority of the ships, as they only ever appear for a few moments in the films or, not at all.

You're right about the 3rd person element, but I can't see Dice going that route. Maybe they could, but all their games from the last 10 years suggest not.

As FPS's go, I think Dice do a good job of giving your character 'personality / an identity' even though you never actually see them, beyond the class selection screen. The class system is the obvious method that they could use to define a character. But there are other things like voice acting, animations, weapon design, sound design (Dice are acknowledged masters) HUD elements - Imagine the variation in HUD between playing as a Stormtrooper, Wookie, Human, Droid etc.

Then throw all that onto the Battlefield template and, IMO, it's a perfect fit. Up until the official announcement for Battlefield 4, forums we're littered with people screaming for a sequel to BF 2142 - A Sci-Fi FPS - and now we have this.

Bottom line is, I'm a fan of both Battlefield and Star Wars so if this happens I'll be the happiest pig in shitsvil.

I think a star wars skinned battlefield would work amazingly.

There are tonnes of vehicles they could use, and easily replicate weapons as laser blasters. Not to mention all the different environments they could have.

I just think it would be so good, its unlikely to actually happen.

Other than when using vehicles I didn't play the original Battlefronts in anything other than first person, that's on PC, perhaps on console it made more sense but not when using mouse and keyboard.

I think it will almost certainly happen, TH. Trouble is, it will be littered with DLC and may also incur a monthly membership fee.

Also, they need to keep that hokey Jedi shit out of it too otherwise there will be hordes of prepubescent Jedis running around with "leetsaberz". Needs to be Stormtroopers vs Wookies/Sandpeople/Rebel Soldiers, a smattering of droids, and maybe one or two AI-controlled Jedi/Sith per battlefield (to give us something to aim at).

I hope it's shit, as I promised myself I wouldn't buy another EA game after being burned by Slim City

For those who never played Battlefont, it was essentially a Star Wars version of battlefield, in 3rd person. It was a steaming pile of awesome.

EA must know that most of the gaming world would enjoy a battlefront 3. They cant be that stupid can they?

I agree with the comments about Battlefront's 3rd person being the best, and if it was first person only it wouldn't be the same series. A big thing in the game was jumping around, strafing, trying to avoid fire. Only way to really succeed at that was to play 3rd person. Did Jedi's work in 1st person?

I imagine whatever game is made by DICE won't feel like the old Battlefront games even if it shares the name. If it was going to be Battlefront it'd be a bit disappointing if it didn't at least try to feel like the old ones.

Who knows if Battlefront 3 will ever see the light of day. Crazy when you look back, and Battlefront 2 was the best selling Star Wars game ever. (Don't know if it still is)
I'm sure any DICE star wars game would be good anyway.

It appears that EA have cancelled that Star Wars game that was first developed by Visceral Games who were later closed down and then rebooted by another studio. Ho hum.

I wonder how much of it is Disney pulling rank, or if they've got significant restrictions like saying they can only do canonical timeline stuff? either way they've got hold of a fucking massive property that's just stagnant. Doesn't sound like EA at all.

So after 6 years, what have we seen in terms of AAA: two battlefronts?

From what I've read a lot of it is EA wanting a quick turn around time to get the games out as quick as possible and get some money. I believe this particular game was taking too long in their eyes.

Bottom of the article mentions that they wanted something smaller in scale that wouldn't take as long to make. Sounds like the open world game they started on wasn't going anywhere fast.

I'm not surprised EA have never been able to make open world games work.

As long as AAA doesn't mean their quality...

@Technoishmatt A Multiplayer only game that was 'fine' but lacking any real depth and a game that had one of the biggest backlashes in games I can remember due to their practices. Good job, guys!

I'm surprised EA still have the license at this point.
