Yesterday I mentioned that I'd ordered all the bits for a brand new Athlon64 PC. Well, I paid top whack for the courier to deliver it before noon today and it all arrived nice 'n' safe in three very big boxes - rather surprising given ShittyLink's usual attitude to packages.

Had a few things to do around midday, but as soon as I got back home I started to work on getting it built. About two hours later at just after five, I'm ready. The moment of truth has arrived... Powers up successfully and POSTs first time!!! Damn, I'm good!!!

Although whoever thought that not putting a mobo proper connector on the case-front USB panel was a sensible idea needs shooting. Having to connect that up pin by pin when the pin markings from the case USB ports do not match the labels detailed in the mobo manual is deeply unpleasant.

So going to have to spend tomorrow installing everything and getting XP config'd the way I want it (I'm installing a 64-bit build of Linux when I get a second hard drive). Then I can get some proper benchmarking done - although looking at the CPU Temperature in the BIOS and seeing it at a measly 21 deg C with just the stock AMD heatsink and fan is a truly joyous thing.

Yep. Particularly when it POSTs first time. It's been a long while since I built a system - Athlons were brand new then - so it took a little bit of time to familiarise myself with what's different.

The USB pins are almost always like that as some boards have nasty little blocks of pins for each USB socket and/or power switches, reset, HD light etc. You get used to it though.

Fortunately, it was only the front USB header on the case itself which was that irksome. The back-plate USB/Firewire header which comes with the mobo was provided with nice and easy connectors. Although I'm buggered if I'm ever going to find a use for eight USB ports...

Pushing that power button for the first time is always a mite worrying. While waiting for the beeps time seems to stretch. And how the heart skips a beat with joy when you get that singular short beep.

And how the fists clench and the invective spews forth when it doesn't beep for the ninth time...
