Registered 7 years agoThe real problem with the whole karate kid thing is that in reality when he got hit by Johnny Daniels body would have folded in on itself and entered another reality. -

He was 22 when he played a 17 year old. Those five years are making a bit of a difference now.

Registered 7 years agoI think Johnny looks alright now. I mean, he was probably 35 in the first film and he looks rough as fuck now but I really hope they don't have a fight. I'm six eps in so I don't know where it goes but it's worrying. -

Registered 17 years agoOn the last episode and really enjoying it, although I do wish that the daughter could at least throw a convincing punch. The school punch up was fun though -

Registered 17 years agoThree episodes in on Away and it's ok. The space stuff is fine and keeping me interested, but it plays too much on the personal drama and the unsubtle politics. They're also quite an unprofessional crew. -

Registered 5 years agoWatching the trailer I thought it was going to be a movie not a series, I’m not sure I can hang the premise for ten hours -

Registered 17 years agoI've binged watched Away over the past two days and I thought it very good. It is a show about family, about discipline and commitment to the cause. It's about loss and love, parenthood and coming of age. It leans heavily into the personal and the emotional, but then tries to balance that out with sci fi action at times. It repeats the themes throughout the ten episodes, which can make a it a little tiresome, 'oh she misses her family and feels bad again?', and some plot pieces are practically straight up lifted verbatim from The Martian, but it's done well.
Hilary Swank can act, in fact the entire ensemble do a terrific job of fleshing the crew out, each are unique, and of course, all are troubled in some way. The, British, Black, Jewish botantist seems almost alien at times, which I think was the idea, could such a person be any more un-American in a Trump world? It's full of outsiders actually, but represents them as what they are, part of the whole, of the normal. Down's syndrome, the disabled, those of Faith, of all sorts, the gay, those on the spectrum, all the bases are covered.
It feels very pro-American with the Russians and Chinese the baddies, as always, but of course, if the ideologies are evil, the people themselves are not. Their humanity shines through in the end.
Some of the action scenes, particularly near the end, are beautiful to experience, with volume and resolution.
I found it moving at several times, but, like this review, a little too long, six episodes would have been the sweet spot I think, but I would welcome a season 2. You've seen a lot of it before, but perhaps not wrapped up in gender and the nature of family, the way this is.
8/10 on course Houston.

Registered 14 years agoCan't believe that nobody involved in the production of Cuties stopped to think it was a good idea. Not the cameraman, the parents of the actresses involved, the producer, the director, the editors, those at Netlifx that signed off on it. Just amazing.
Haven't seen it, have zero intention too. Just watching the trash fire from a distance. -

Registered 16 years agoIt's like any child pageantry. Those involved don't see it as a problem because they're neck-deep in the competition of it, it's serious business.
Netflix know that bringing that to world is gold because it'll cater to that audience in spreading the "sport" and get the reaction you mention from the rest of us. -

Registered 18 years agoI'm struggling with Dark, I must admit. Think I've watched 3 episodes and I could barely tell you what's happened. I get that's the point, but boy is it slow. Think I'll stick with it - I just need to be in the right mood. At the moment, it's not something I'm inclined to flick on after a long day. -
But to what end is the controversy justified? It sounds like something other platforms actively want to avoid.
