Just got a 3 month subscription to MUBI for a quid. Browsing the arty, eclectic selection makes me feel like an ignorant pleb - any must-sees? I've added Portrait of a Lady on Fire to my watchlist.

I've got a mubi subscription I haven't looked at yet, I'll have a look and then check Sight and Sound to see if my opinion is correct and valid.

@monkman76 Depends what you like. Of the films that are up currently, these are worth watching I think:

    The Bigamist
    The Hitch-Hiker
    Festen
    The Long Goodbye
    The Straight Story
    Le Havre
    Kikujiro

@monkman76 I'd second the rec for Festen. Pleased to see the PJ Harvey doc on there (Dog named money ?).

There wasn't as much on there that I wanted to watch as I hoped but as stuff rotates I'm sure there'll be a few good things come along.

I find Mubi a lot better than Netflix fwiw. The quality on Netflix is so low and the film selection... pish, really. There's a lot of pish on Mubi too but it rotates out quickly enough and there's always at least 8-10 things on there which look interesting at a given time. They've added a permanent collection now too (the 'Library') so you don't need to be in a rush to watch stuff. I like the distilled collection of 30 films on the Now Playing tab too - focusses the mind. I find too often you can go on Netflix and then just doomscroll forever before finding something bang average to watch. The doomscrolling is depressing.

I'd forgotten season 3 of Cobra Kai is out - that's my evening sorted.

I'm enjoying it, but you would have thought that after three seasons they would have learned how to put a decent fight together.

Honestly, the girl is so bad at karate, it takes you out the moment sometimes.

She really is shit, although she can throw a kick better than she can express an emotion. Still, I enjoyed it overall.

Sat through the first 5 eps of Cobra Kai S3 tonight with my youngest. Predictable but entertaining, with the odd nod to the adults too. Helped that heíd made me watch KK2 over Christmas. KK3 was wank though.

Can I say the netflix suggestions actully mean nothing. I swear they just suggest any random movie or show.

Yeah Netflix auto recommendations are not to be trusted, think they just throw up unseen shows from the same genre as the latest ones you watched. With Spotify it feels like there is some fancy algorithm behind since that is usually a better fit for me.

There used to be with the old rating system but with the like or dislike, it's pretty random

Why would you assume that? Barely any of the films on Netflix are.

They've put the prices up again the twats. I'm paying as much for Netflix as I do my TV licence. That seems wrong somehow.

Prices going up again. 14 quid for the 4k version is getting close to "fuck that" territory considering how little I actually watch on there.

Does any other platform have separate packages for HD and UHD like this? (I know Amazon do it sensibly at least)

£14 is an absolute piss take

We'd already downgraded from the UHD to the standard pack. Will have to move to the subscribe and binge model when there's something worthwhile on I think.

Iíll stick with it for a while longer, mostly because Iím about to cancel Prime Video due to Brexit. I went to watch something last night and about 90% of the content is now unavailable in my region. Itís only the Amazon Originals remaining.

With so many big streaming services, the Balkanisation of content and increasing prices I wonder how close we are to a tipping point for subscribers bailing or letting accounts lapse.
