Has anyone been to Myanmar/Burma recently? I am thinking of going this winter, I have heard that it is safe now for tourists but I would like some first hand information. Would I be able to move around freely or will I need an escort like in NK? Ideas of things to see/places to go would be nice too. Thanks |

Registered 19 years agoI would like to go at some point, have some ancestry there. Sounds like things have improved in last couple of years with the reforms but long way to to go reach even Laos level for tourism, let alone Thai. Foreign office advice at the moment is pretty much only Rangoon is definitely ok, avoid border areas and areas of muslim/buddhist tension (obviously!). I've seen private tours, but expensive and always feels like tourism on the rails, not really seeing the country. -

Registered 15 years agoDoes anyone know of any online tour guides that I can speak/type with to arrange a holiday there? I have heard that some places are off limits and have some other questions and would like to speak to someone local (I'm in China so don't have access to international tour agencies etc)? -
Myanmar and Burma are on my work's "Do not visit" list. I'm not going to question that

I've used them on the recommendation of friends that used to live there.
Maybe a little pricey but reliable.
Because friends lived there while I lived in Thailand I've been a few times. Bago and Inlay lake are definitely well worth seeing. Also the quality of their English is pretty good... Especially with the older folks who're also pretty friendly to Brits as they remember the pre-junta days fondly.
Food is a bit hit and miss though... Pretty basic compared with Thailand.
Plenty of stuff around Yangon is relaxed enough to do on your own... Took the train to Bago, you can fly to Mandalay. But definitely need chaperones in the countryside, for example Inlay. Though even 10 years ago when I went to Inlay it was mostly just a friendly local guy that picked me up at the hotel in a boat in the morning and dropped me off in the evening. Admittedly the hotel was on the lake so I couldn't exactly wander off.

I have no idea where the "and" came from! I was tired at work, that's my excuse. -

I have 5 weeks in SE Asia coming up (fly to Bangkok then back from Singapore) and I was thinking of starting off getting my VISA in Bangkok then flying to Yangon then maybe visiting Bagan, Inle Lake and maybe mandalay before then going to Cambodia/Laos.

We like a mix of city, nature and beach on holiday and have been to Vietname, Malaysia and Thailand before. We could maybe spend the beach sections of the trip in Thailand.
Any suggestions/tips?
Cheers DP. -

Registered 15 years agoBorneo is great. Mt Kinabalu, the rainforests, the islands off KK, it really has it all except for city life but you will probably stop off at KL before and after anyway. -

Registered 16 years agoThe Thai office of the agency I linked should be able to sort out Myanmar visas for a small extra fee saving quite a ballache of hanging around the Myanmar embassy.
Beaches on the western side of Thailand will have the best weather at this time of year. -

Registered 19 years agoPlanning on visiting the Malaysia and specifically the Perhentian islands early next year (Feb/Mar). Anyone been?
I'm kind of nervous as I've never done proper travelling before, always booked hotels and flights etc...
Any tips? -

Registered 15 years agoI considered Myanmar as part of a final south-east Asia trip while I was living in Korea (I ended up doing the trans-Siberian in the end). When I looked into it I saw that you couldn't vactually travel from South to North Myanmar within the country due to no go areas (without special visas not for the everyday tourist). I wanted to see both with most of the famous tourist spots being in the south but I had decided to do the land border at the northeast as I wanted to see the side that less tlurists did and do tours to see the hill tribes etc.
I would still like to visit there some time though but being back in the UK it is a bit more of a trip than it was living in SK. -
