Arstechnica have a great review if you have an hour spare. Memory management and energy saving are the big draws from what I've read. /can't upgrade yet cos enterprises are shit at updating their shit. |

Registered 17 years agoJust read that Ars Technica review. Not sure if I'm more impressed by it, or by the clever energy optimisation work Apple have out into Mavericks. -

Registered 14 years agoIt should be pointed out that there is apparently another OS X update coming in the not too distant future that will mirror the iOS 7 look, as Ives has been pretty vocal about getting more consistency between how the software looks and works between their product range.
I'm guessing Mavericks is just an update to get the core technology in place and we will be seeing a bigger update next year filled with fancy new features and a new look. -

How goes it mess with the GMail / Mail combo?
One thing I have read, is that it completely and utterly fucks over Mail/Gmail users. Again, I haven't noticed that either, but I'm not upgrading my main iMac, possibly ever, unless that's fixed. -

Registered 16 years agoI'll take a 25% battery life increase on my 2008 MBP thank you very much, if that claim in the AT review holds up. Best update evar etc. -

I've got the same macbook (mines a 15 inch macbook pro 2008), have you, or anybody else, installed it? If so, how is the performance?
I thought the energy saving applied more to the latest hardware, I'll be very impressed if they eek anymore out of mine. -

Registered 16 years agoToo early for me to say, I only installed this morning, but the ars technica reviewer claims a 25% increase on his 2007 pre unibody MBP. Performance seems much the same as before for me which makes sense. -

Registered 16 years agoTo put it very, very simply its a lot better at shutting off background services that you arent using, so it will help any hardware its capable of being installed on. -

Registered 17 years agoSo I work on the Service Desk at a major Oil and Gas Exploration/Production company, I do everything from 1st-3rd line support (AD, Exchange, Application servers, etc)
We have a sister company in our offices and an older dude who is technically their Service Desk, he's completely incompetent in every way imaginable (every user has a different type of machine, different OS (windows 7, XP and 8) all the applications are installed manually. Basically it's a fucking mess.
Anyway - He just came up to me with a post it note that said
MAC OSX
Mate, what's the difference between these two?

Registered 17 years agoThe only issue I've found is that it didn't warn me of low battery so just died in my arms. Was a touch annoying.
Not sure if this is new or not but I also found that it tells me the condition of my battery now. Apparently I need a new one soon. Damnit. -

Registered 16 years agoI expect 5/6 or so years of usage from an apple laptop, my last 2 have gone for that long, always getting the top of the line one for better future proofing.
Scout, where does it tell you that? I've been using the iStat widget to get a health percentage on the battery, the stock one on my 2008 is sitting at 89% which isn't a bad return at all. -

The one thing I don't like about this is that all updates now seem to go through the App Store. Now this wouldn't be a problem if the App Store didn't require that credit card is tied to you Apple ID to download even a free update. I don't have a credit card.
While I could create a new Apple ID and then select "None" as the payment option, that would also require me to pay for things like iPhoto since those programs are of course still linked to my current ID. My version of iPhoto doesn't work with Maverick for some reason, so the update essentially killed iPhoto for me.
(I'm coming from Lion. This might have been introduced in the previous revision) -

Registered 20 years agoI've got a "late 2010" Air (4gb) with SSD that for the last 12 months+ has slipped from mere seconds to wake up and be useable to taking about 30 seconds. It was getting frustrating but I kept putting off doing a clean OS install.
I thought I'd give it one last chance with the App Store update to Mavericks (ie not a clean Mavericks install).
As well as the Mavericks update I decided to delete Parallels and my Win 7 VM install as I never really use it anymore. Between the two I'm back to a 3 second wake up and a nice and responsive Air. Can't tell you which of the Mavericks update or the Parallel uninstall did it as I did them both together. Gut feel is that Mavericks takes most of the credit.
End result is being a happy bunny and it feels like I've got a new Air again. -

Registered 16 years agoThe interesting (not so much) thing about the new software update is that it doesn't support any apple software pre-App Store.
I've had a Final Cut Pro update I've been cancelling for the last five years that has now, finally, vanished without trace. -
@TarickStonefire
No, it only gives me three different credit cards as options here unfortunately.
iPhoto is version 9.1, which doesn't seem to be that old.
Edit: I did try to download 9.4 from Apple website, but when I try to install it just says that the iPhoto version I have must be updated through the App Store.
