Like most things, it wasn't as simple as one thing. A number of issues led to PlayStation's dominance. Nintendo waited too long to get the bloody thing out of the door; Sony dictated the price wars; Nintendo had a past of being a shithead about publishing licences and Sony's terms were fairer; and so on. Simply having a disc drive and keeping Final Fantasy VII would have not turned the tide. After all, the Saturn's initial success in Japan didn't save it.
The N64 had it's faults, the blurry graphics were a particular annoyance. But for me, it was the most fun I've had on any console to date.
I'm not sure a disk drive would of made much difference. What was needed was more games, I remember patiently waiting for every new release.

Still funny how it was Nintendo who pushed Sony into the game console market in the first place. Didn't turn out too well for both Nintendo and Sega.
