Lomogrpahy's new product that they've been hinting at for a while has been revealed, and it's a DIY SLR kit. Pretty cool. http://shop.lomography.com/gb/konstruktor |

Registered 17 years agoDecent present for Father's Day you reckon? -
It's definitely a nice present for a photographer, rather than something you'd buy yourself. Good price point as well.
I wonder if the DIY nature of it makes it susceptible to light leaks and such. Quite like the idea of something with the flexibility of an SLR, but with the randomness of a Holga or something. -

I don't think anyone's going to stick an L lens on it, but you could have some fun with some old vintage lenses and stuff. You can get old duffed up lenses for next to nothing, and they'll probably look better anyway, as this is more about taking photos with character than ultra-sharp milky bokkeh etc.
Would you trust your lenses with something so flimsy? -

Maybe they'll do a range of DIY lenses! -
It comes with a 50mm lens which would be totally ideal anyway, so you don't even need to worry about buying lenses. -

£15-£25 every time you develop a film :/ -
Mmm, yeah.
Do ASDA still do it? They were super cheap at one point. £2 a film or something. -
Sounds complicated to me. -

Registered 13 years ago@kalel My local Asda still definitely develop. Developing film is certainly not 15-25 quid every time. Plenty of places do cheap mailorder processing still aswell. -
I usually get a high-res CD whenever I get a film developed which does tend to push the price up towards £15 or so, but yeah, that was a bit of an overstatement. -

Sensors are very delicate things for one. And you musn't get dust on them, so them being part of a DIY kit makes it go from a fun airfix rough and ready affair, to a delicate white glove wearing watch-making type affair.

For why? Same structure, just an electronic sensor in the place of the film.
Sounds complicated to me.
(Note: I know nothing about how digital cameras work.)
Also there's batteries to deal with. Would AAs power a DSLR? Also it would be the world's most basic DSLR - you'd have no auto-metering or auto-focus or any the other main benefits of one (beyond it having digital images).
It's probably not totally impossible but it feels like it would be quite a different thing to this. The whole point of this is that it's so simple.
