I've got to go back and try to fix this problem. I was round at a friend's house most of last night trying to get a wireless client to connect to the internet through a wirelss router in another nearby house. The signal is a-ok, and I can browse the netwrok no problems. But it no see the internet, which workd just fine on the machine connected to the router by cable. Both machines run XP, while the wirless client has an AOL BB account which now doesn't bloody work either. Does anyone have any suggestions, or know of some good FAQs on the subject. My googling has turned up little of note. |
Wireless network - internet sharing. Bollocks.

Beyond that, I don't know. -
You should go to the netstumbler forums. They're really friendly there
Seriously though. FAQs on the subject galore! Just don't ask any questions. -

Got the first two because the DHCP server on the router is not providing IPs across the wireless. I may try out manualy configuring the DNS. Not something I've tried before, but worth a shot.
I'm off to netstumbler, keeping me fingers crossed. -

Registered 20 years agoI'm on a wireless network, what happens when I don't have the DNS set is I click a bookmark, the status bar flicks off and on and then nothing. I have it set all across the network, anywhere that will take a DNS I have set it to the same one. -

type
ping 66.102.9.104
(ip address of google.com)
if that works and you get replies, try
type
ping www.google.com
if that doenst work start up internet explorer and browse to
http://66.102.9.104
and see if you get anything -

Registered 20 years agoI was trying all that. No ping to anywhere but the router itself and the other machine on the network. DHCP didn't give the woreless PC an IP; the wireless NIC wouldn't work at all unless I manualy assigned an IP to it. Manualy assigning a the router IP as a gatewaty had no effect.
The problems I get are similar to what you describe sam, although IE brings up the good old c:\\res**dns page.
Still not haivng any luck tracking down a solution. I don't want to spend most of today tugging my hair out. grrr. -

If you're jacking someone else's bandwidth, remember that this could be LAN only, and not connected to the net...
Run a 'trace route' (dos prompt type tracert /? for help) and see how far your packets travel before they get drop... He could be dropping your packets based on the IP addy you're using, or your MAC address...
oh and MAYBE be's phishing for connections to hack YOUR PC... Ever think of that? -

Registered 20 years agoNa, it's all legit. The router belongs to the guy and the other PC to his bird's son, who lives next door. -

Registered 17 years agoMake sure that your wireless connection isn't bridged in XP. I had exactly the same problem before, because my network had previously been configured differently. It wouldn't get an IP from the router until I removed the wireless adapter from the bridge. You this in the network set-up panel in XP. -

Registered 19 years agoCheck to see if the wireless card is set to ad-hoc or infastructure mode.
That router will only work for cards set to infastructure.
Also, keep all settings the same (i.e. turn off encryption on both cards + router).
That router will assign IP's through DCHP over wireless connections - i have one and it works fine most of the time.
If that doesnt work, try changing the channel that it's broadcasting on from 11 to something else (doesnt matter).

Registered 20 years agoTried manualy inputing the DNS address, no joy. It appears as if the computer isn't looking across the wireless for the internet; i tkeeps trying to dial it's own connection. Which, by the way, doesn't work anymore either, says it cannot locate the hosts file.
So now not only does the wireless not connect to the internet, the bastarding Aol doesn't want to play either. Help! -

Registered 17 years agoHonestly, check how your connection are bridged. This is exactly what I was experiencing. Make sure the wireless adapter is not bridged. -

Registered 20 years agoADSL is connected, typing this using the router connection.
AoL is a bugger, but I'm not at the point of reinstalling windows just yet.
The machine has no problems seeing the network, just so long as it's IPs are manulay defined. LEave it to the routers DHCP and nothing happens, it cannot get an IP and uses standrard windows range instead.
Bill, have you had any problems with connectin to the net over the wireless? -

As a last resort you could try a thread on netstumbler. They do really know their stuff, and probably can help, even if they're not willing.
Just be sure to post the link so we can all laugh at the flame war
