    Have sex with the bad guys. There's your game.

    Then why bother with stories or interesting characters in video games if they are just video games? I think games are an art form just like film, novels, paintings, and so on. The advantage it has IS its gameplay. They allow you to dive inside the world the designers have created and actually interact with it.

    All I'm saying is the interaction at the moment is flawed and poorly designed. Dismissing all criticism with "They're just video games" contributes little to this discussion.

    Good thread, I totally agree as I'm so bored of every second game being all about shooting and emulating terrible action films.

    Why does it always have to come down to that? Why can't we have a genuinely intelligent game that doesn't boil itself down to just shooting things?
    It's about domination. Either shoot the grunts in the face. Stab them in their belly. Build a powerful economy and destroy the enemy faction.
    Use your wits to solve puzzles and continue along your path, dominating your environment.

    It's appealing to dominate in a video game.
    In real life -

    Bad boys, bad boys whatcha gonna do?
    Whatcha gonna do when they come for you?

    Having just completed Uncharted 3 for the first time I think I can see where the OP is coming from, it makes no sense plotwise if there is a cut scene with the goodguy and the bad guy having a minor disagreement so the the good guy goes and kills 500 minions to get a cup

    @Spunkweazle
    It's a limitation of the shooter genre.

    It's apparent in GTA IV as well. He kills far too many people to gain any sympathy but that's a limitation of the game.

    @bobdebob But is uncharted a shooter? It's a VERY bad one if it is, I played all four uncharted games for the story and the spectacle despite the extremely sub par shooting sections that seemed to get longer each time

    @Spunkweazle

    Haven't played UC, so that's why I used GTA IV as an example but I imagine shooting badguys in UC are still a decent portion of the game.

    I actually find I'm starting to prefer games where each shot/kill actually matters.

    In your standard FPS/TPS, bullets are flying everywhere in their hundreds, and enemies are falling by the dozen. It's kill or be killed.

    In games like Silent Hunter, ArmA, the DCS series and BMS, the environment is a little more real. There are considerations to make for every shot you fire, and there can be bad consequences for firing a shot. Unfortunately, it still just boils down to kill or be killed, but I like the fact that shooting is a more considered experience that makes up a smaller percentage of the total play time.

    Just stick to playing The Sims, leave all the fun/best interactions, ie. shooting stuff to the gamers.

    If you think the options are mindless shooting or the Sims then you are one of the problems of modern gaming.

    Yes, because there is no middle ground to be had. It's either shooting stuff or The Sims. :rolleyes:

    I find single player shooting games to be terribly dull when every other character in the level is an enemy. If you know everyone you meet will be a bad guy to shoot then it soon gets dull.

    Two of the most interesting games I've played that involve guns are deus ex and dishonored, both of which provide a world that feels a bit more real, rather than a shooting gallery.

    Ha, I remember posting in the thread that it looked good until the monsters!

    I didn't know what type of game it was beforehand, the setting looked good, blimps and stuff too, thought it might be some kind of alternate London game with highway robbers, competing gangs, maybe even a Jack the ripper style killer, but no it's shoot the demons.

    And if I ever have to kill a dragon, I always try and look at it from the dragon's point of view...
