This thread is semi-inspired by the fussy eaters who are on Come Dine With Me who refuse to eat anything out of the norm. Out of the norm on CDWM is usually something as tame as veal. I'm thinking more along the lines of insects, brain etc, pretty much what you'd find in say, a foreign country. I like to think I would, and often get peeved at those who don't just because they don't like the idea of it. Obviously there's a big difference between knowing you won't like the taste monkey penis because just the thought makes you sick, compared to not at least trying some poor woman's apple pie on CDWM because you don't think you like apples. Thoughts? |
Would you try anything once?

Registered 14 years agoI'd probably try most things. The only lines I can think of is something that's still alive and anything similar to tripe. /shudders -

Registered 14 years agoWhen I was a kid I wouldn't eat bacon because I thought it looked horrible. One of the major regrets of my life and I've been making up for it ever since.
I like to think I could keep an open mind and try new foods, but then I'm quite squeamish at the best of times so who knows.
I do know a guy who's extremely unadventurous when it comes to food though. I don't think he'd tried tomato sauce til he was in his thirties. -

Registered 15 years agoI look at a menu in a restaurant and say "yup I can eat anything on here" and I normally try and have something different every time. -
I am pretty sure I am not a fussy eater, but I do have or would have difficulties eating a lot of stuff I am not culturally accustomed to. Is there something like a "fussy eater out of his cultural boundaries"? If yes, that's me.

Registered 12 years agoI think that's fair. No judgment here. Perhaps I'm just more used to seeing "strange" food.
Mmmm smiley...

Registered 15 years agoDepends on the food in question really. I refused to eat dog when in China, not so much because it was dog but because of how they treated the poor little buggers - skinned them alive as they thought it improved the flavour.
But spent a few months in Japan and as I didn't know many kanji most meals turned into pointing at random dishes on the menu. So god only knows what I actually ate. Sea urchin was a bit disappointing, raw horse was rather chewy and a bit hard work and even the thought of natto makes me want to hurl now. -

Think I'd eat grasshoppers or worms, but this would make me projectile-vomit:

A turd rolled in sugar has almost no nutritional value. Aversion to eating insects is a western thing, and a bit prissy.

So does a turd rolled in sugar, doesn't make it ok to eat one.
Wahaca south bank popup in London is doing grasshoppers.
They taste nutty and sweet.

Registered 17 years agoThe only food I can't bring myself to try is black pudding. The whole concept of it is just wrong. On so many levels.
It's just a massive scab! -

Registered 15 years agoBP is lovely, just think of it as a savoury cake. Great dipped in yoke etc.. -
I have a reputation that I'll do/try anything, especially when a bet's involved.
I'd love to try one of these:
