Registered 16 years agoI will generally try anything on a western menu and consider myself quite adventurous, but I do tend to eat with my eyes, so if I find something gross, i just wont eat it.
I tend to avoid offal for the same reason, but it does extend to insects, oysters and general animal genitalia.
I dont think its particularly prissy to avoid grasshoppers. In fact, i think its particularly wanky to expect people to eat them without complaint. Its like going over to asia and calling them wankers for avoiding dairy. -

Salmon roe from the Japanese is the eggs, cod roe from the chip shop is, I think, the pancreas. Still fancy it?

Registered 16 years agoI think its perfectly alright to dismiss eating insects, to be honest. It doesnt make you some kind of culturally prudish stick in the mud, it makes you someone who doesnt want to eat grasshoppers. -

I've had some in Iceland - better than the vast majority of the steaks I've tasted. Of course the day after trying some on a whim I discovered that I was part of the tourist industry which sustained the practice and felt like a bit of a dick. Fucking tasty though, mind...

Yep. I won't be doing it again, that's for sure and I do genuinely feel guilty that I did in the first place.
Yeah eating whale is out of order to be honest. IMO of course. -

There's absolutely no humane way to hunt them, basically. It's a pretty brutal process of shooting a massive harpoon into whatever area they can spot then waiting for it to tire itself out and die.

Registered 15 years agoMaybe if we ate more of them, people would start commercially farming them and the whale would be saved as a result. Mmmmmm whale. -
I find the whale matter interesting. Of course they're an endangered species, on the other hand you'll only have to kill one being for getting the amount of "meat" that you'd need hundreds of pigs for. So I think in a sense it is less immoral than eating pork. -

It's not like our industrial meat production is humane, is it? Or fish caught in nets and then left to suffocate in buckets? etc. etc.
