What about malaria and mosquito nets?
The African Government refuses to give away free mosquito nets to those in Africa that are unable to buy them as a result of social marketing. Many people have been urging the African government to give them away but they wont because they are complete wankers. The anti-malarial vaccine is being developed and trialled by a chap from Oxford University. He had a single vaccine at one point that seemed to work to an extent but for some weird reason (commercial/sponsorship pressures?) he trialled a combined vaccine. The problem was that one vaccine cancelled out the other so he is having to re-trial the single vaccine......again.... The BBC website claims that over 2 million kids die a year. This is the figure given to Malaria fatalities alone. Its all very well having all this money donated but there is not an anti-malarial vaccine to buy yet. Malaria is a greater threat in certain parts of Africa than Aids, but does not carry the same 'kudos' as an Aids or TB campaign might..... If the money is not being spent on a Malaria vaccine (the biggest threat) what is it being spent on? All that many of rural Africans need is a bednet that is treated with a chemical that does kill mosquitos. This would be preventative and would greatly reduce the number of fatalities. The article does not mention malaria. WTF is going on? ![]() (My info comes from the excellent documentary that was on a couple of weeks ago.) Edited by Madder Max at 16:36:00 25-01-2005 |

Registered 20 years agoWe had adverts up in our department asking if we wanted to take part in the malaria drug trials for 50 quid a shot...

Do you know how the trial is doing? The docu left off from Jan 2004.... -
They're still advertising for willing bodies. I don't know much about the results but new notices went up at the start of this term...(so if you see a cash-strapped TerminalTerror wandering around with red blotches all over him, my advice would be to RUN!)
