The one I bought for my gf turned up last week. It's great. It's probably a bit pricey for what it is, but it is very nice, and she's proper chuffed which is what counts.
Only problem we've found is having two ipods set up on the same PC is a little problamatic, depending on what is plugged when. I'm terrified she's going to wipe my 40gig bad boy and fill it up with Dido! -

Registered 17 years agoWhen did you place the order for your Shuffles + are they the 1 gig or 512 versions.
I ordered a 512 Shuffle on the 16th January but haven't heard anything yet. There is a 2/3 week backorder on the 512's and 1 month back-order on the 1 Gig models apparently.
Its estimated to arrive the early part of February. Did your Shuffles arrive before or after the estimated dates?
Cheers -

Registered 19 years agoordered on the keynote day, and I got a predicted date of the 26th, when it duly arrived. Should have been delivered yesterday but I wasn't at home to collect it.
edit: It's the 1 gig version

Registered 17 years agoMy 1gb version also turned up yesterday (as predicted). I had it ordered immediately after the keynote (or as soon as Apple's servers would let me).
Transcoding the high bitrate files to 128kbit AAC is quite slow on my iBook 1.2ghz, so I've turned that off. It would be great if one could set the threshold higher (e.g. only reencode everything above 192kbit). Other than that a very nifty machine. You wouldn't believe how loud that tiny thing can be on full volume...

Yeah, I ordered it as soon as Apple would let me, but it turned up after 3 days as opposed to the predicted 2 weeks which was impressive. Unfortunately, because I thought it was going to be two weeks, I then had a mare rearranging delivery, which is why I didn't get it till the weekend.

This whole portable video thing is a mystery to me. I mean, you can't use it when you're walking, because you'll keep bumping into people which limits you to the train/tube/bus. I tend to use those times to catch up on reading, so I really don't see the market for the portable video thing - unless you can't read of course

Which is a problem given that I work on 3G phone technology, and that's all about pushing video/rich media to your phone... -

Registered 20 years agoI can't believe people are buying ipod shuffles.
If it makes you happy then I'm pleased for ya, but to me they seem like the most ridiculously crap idea ever.
If you want something that plays a random selection of songs, buy an FM radio (I suppose tube journeys are a justification of sorts).
Anyway to be clear I'm not slating people, I just don't get this one at all. -

Registered 19 years agoIt doesn't just play a random selection. For example, I'm just gonna load it up with modd selections - drum and bass, metal, chill out and then put it on random until I get to an album I want to listen to, then I'll put it on album shuffle for a while.
I take the point though, it's possible to get the same functionality in a cheaper package.
Oh, and as for FM radio, the quality of music on that doesn't bear thinking about... -

I watch videos I re-rip off DVDs on it... On Series 3 of Red Dwarf at the moment (Which is embarrasing, cause I keep laughing to myself on the underground O_o). It's great for the tube... Although I think it's still too socially unacceptable, and I *think* everyone who sees me at it thinks I'm about to Happy slap them or something... -

Chris - It's exactly the same as any MP3 flash stick jobby. You can play albums or single tracks one by one, whatever you want.
The shuffle thing is just an option, but it's by no means the only way of listening to your music on it. They're making the shuffle thing as its USP as a marketing tool, but its just a gimmick really. -

Incidentally amongst my friends, the official greeting that expresses the feeling of just getting in to the office when you're worn out in the morning is simply... "UGH".
Any more odd expressive words? -

Registered 17 years agoShuffles do offer relatively good value for money though really - I have been looking around and have been unable to find a branded 512MB MP3 player for any cheaper.
The shuffle also comes with a rechargable battery which is a bonus as I will be listening to it all day (saving me on hundreds of batteries). Also I-tunes is pretty good software which is lacking from any other players. -

Or Nike Trainers (or any 'branded' trainers).
We pretty much ALL buy 'labels'... Some 'value' the Apple label more than others... Like I'm a sucker for Sony, Renault and MSI...

Registered 17 years agoSeriously, I don't get the iPod craze at all. And now with with 1GB version. Baffled.
I bought an imate JAM t'other day, which is sweetness incarnate. Now there's functionality for you in something smaller than an iPod.
Phone/Windows 2003 Pocket PC/Media Player/Remote and with a little more investment GPS and anything else you fancy buying software for it to do.
Genius, and good looking.
£70ish on contract.

LOL... But look at the SIZE of it... ROFL... It can also be used as a shield Roman-centurian-style!!!
Makes sense in a way though... a device to do it all, and thus avoid more gear than a batman utility belt...
Oh and yeah... Renault... I have a high regard for them... -

Registered 20 years agoSize? O_o I guess you haven't seen one in the flesh. It's slightly smaller than a regular iPod, and weighs about the same. It's a tiny bit wider than a regular non-flip mobile, but is about the same height & depth.
/hugs iMate JAM
But I have to say, relating back to the Sega robot dog story a couple of days ago, what is with the 'i' prefix all of a sudden?

Registered 17 years agoI wasn't actually too concerned about a 'branded' player I just wanted a mp3 player that would play enough music to get me through each day without any hassle or needing to keep buying batteries for it. The hundred or so songs that the £69 512mb shuffle can hold is ideal. 'Unbranded' players of similar capacities aren't really any cheaper anyway as far as I can see. -

Regardless, though. The current gen of mobiles phones are fantastic devices. It's almost a lie to call them phones first and foremost, isn't it?
I like the idea of devices like the Shuffle but not enough to to warrant seperate gadgets when I can have one which does so much already.
Anyone know of a good mobile review site which isn't full to the brim with tards and product placement? And actually tells you the REAL tech specs of the phones, ie Symbian/CE versions?

More functionality in a cheaper, smaller, lighter package. With a screen.

Can you choose which song you ant on the shuffle, or is it literally always on shuffle?
