Too many boss battles that are nothing like the normal gameplay. And often harder.

Cat girls, stereotype emo main character that turns into someone that wants to ''protect everyone'', little children in your party.

Oh. Japanese game is short hand for JRPG. In that case, Blue Dragon.

The constant reliance on swords and sharp sticks despite everyone knowing magic and having flying cars.

The ability to not stay grounded in reality, even when the setting calls for it, e.g. Yakuza 2, would've liked to continue the series but apparently it gets worse.

I agree with most of the above points. Also in the case of JRPG's random battles. It's never been a mechanic that I've liked and these days it just feels really dated.

    Not. Enough. Chocobos.

Every game. From every region. Should have Chocobos.

Meh, you just have to learn their patterns.

Edit: Also, Razz makes an excellent point.

The constant grunting and sighing characters do since they introduced full voice acting.

Although I don't play many JRPGs anymore I still enjoy them a lot, but this needs to go.

    Squeaky voices, pokemon, huge breasts.
Also Mario's name. Why the hell should he be Mario and not Jose or Carlos.

I wouldn't mind if it was limited to mostly identikit RPGs. Trouble is this shit has started invading my beloved 2d shooters now.

I'd say I encounter that 'issue' more in Japanese games than Western ones. That's all.
