Registered 16 years agoDon't really use anything google. The Nokia/microsoft maps does everything I need and there are loads of non official yt apps which when I use they seem fine to me. -
@robthehermit
I'm on PAYG. Will be moving country within the next 6-12 months so don't want to tie myself to a new contract. Yeah I read a few Lumia 830 reviews and it seems to tick all the boxes.
On second thought, viewing YT videos in a browser might actually help getting rid of the ads via blocker (am currently using Firefox & ABP on my Android but the YT app for videos, assume the former will be possible in WP too). Also it seems Google are updating their apps every second day which is driving me crazy as I can't really use my phone sensibly during the update. -
@Goban
Yeah to be honest with you, I use Google Maps out of sheer laziness - I really like MapFactor Navigator combined with OSM offline maps for my SatNav needs - and I see it's available on Windows too so that's great.
Good stuff also about YT app alternatives, but if the browser works well enough then that's ok - I do most of my YT browsing on the laptop or Android tablet anyways. -

Registered 15 years agoI liked the WP experience, unfortunately it was shit if you live in China, which I do. -
Yep I think I'm ready myself to make the jump this time around - Android used to be a breath of fresh air years ago but the bloat issues are putting me off it - and avoiding Google products is a nice side effect as well as I think they're becoming ever so omnipresent which I don't want to support (personal beef I had with Google hipster employees being a nuisance where I used to live before notwithstanding
). -

Wouldn't that apply to most western tech products over there?

Registered 15 years agoNope, Android is fine, apparently IOS is too, you can just change regional settings. WP changes all the text to Chinese and Cortana only speaks Chinese (although she understood English). There are no VPN apps for WP, the last update allowed you to input VPN info but I couldn't get it to work, possibly because I am a mong but it still ruined the user experience for me.
It was fine for the first 6 months I had it and I loved it but then after the (amber?) update it all changed. -
Ah right that sounds like a pain. More like a silly MS decision then rather than something imposed by the government which I thought would be the problem. -

Registered 8 years agoI got the Lumina 635.
For what it is, it is a decent phone. For 50 quid. You can do all the basics like Facebook, twitter, internet, phone, msg, camera etc. Probably more if you wanted.
Camera isn't great, but the battery life is. Lasts me best part of a working week.
Not sure what the 830 etc are like, but if it improves on a what is a good base level smart phone it should be a good. -
The 830 seems like a good shout (the 930 doesn't seem to have extendable memory which I find odd - absolutely essential as I like to carry all my photos and music with me at all times).
About £200-220 (unlocked) on Amazon and the reviews are encouraging. Hate to say it but because I'm too lazy to bring my 'proper' camera with me other than during big holidays, the ability to take decent snapshots is quite important to me - my wife's Alpha is miles ahead of my S2 in terms of image quality and features (obviously, being the newer phone). Never thought I would say that as I used to be a bit of a photo snob but there you go.
The S2 is doing my head in - simple tasks like opening and typing a message in hangouts are only possible after the software "settles down" after a number of seconds of lag. It's awful. Might take the plunge this weekend in fact!

Registered 6 years agoI picked up a Nexus 6 on the cheap, if you want a larger phone you can do a lot worse than last years android flagship for £200.

Registered 6 years agoPretty decent actually, ok its far from best in class but is easily the best Nexus camera. Worth bearing in mind the Nexus 6 was not meant to be a budget phone unlike the Nexus 4/5, so has alot of decent hardware (atleast for when it was designed).
Camera review here

Just noticed on that review that they say it doesnt have active display, uh i swear it does or atleast a form of it.

Registered 18 years agoIf you can get a Moto X Play cheap (thanks godofporn) its a damn good phone. The battery lasts forever, I get around 6 hours screen on time and I'm a heavy user.
That's with no configuration to improve battery life (greenify etc) .. Normally I'd do all that stuff and still get no more than 4 hours ..
Previous phones being Z1 Compact, LG G2, HTC One M7, One plus One (for sale, PM me!) -

I like how it keeps going when it's quite low. Normally a low battery warning means you're pretty much fucked.

With my Moto X, it prompts at 15% battery left and then keeps going for a good while still.
At first, after a low battery warning, I'd avoid using it, to assure it would still have power in case someone wants to reach me.
Nowadays, I don't mind looking something up, getting directions on google maps or whatnot, even with 3 or 4 % battery left. It hangs in there.
If I know I'll be charging it in the next 2 to 3 hours, I use it as per normal, except maybe watching videos or something. -

Registered 15 years agoQuick one, are additional SIMs on your contract a thing? ie: I want my provider (Vodafone) to give me a duplicate SIM to add into a tablet and share my data usage across tablet and phone. -
They can be, depends on the network. Could you not just use your phone as a hotspot?
