Here runs from 1 to 50 rather than reverse-shock-o-vision order.

A hell of a lot of 70s cheese.

Huh? There's only a handful of 70s films on there. Most of it's 60s.

I've never had a soundtrack album I'm truly happy with though. It's very hard to judge music when it's played against a film, and the tracks aren't really designed to be played back to back with no other input. Mind you, the ones I have bought have been films that reuse existing music, wheras it's probably worth buying ones like Once upon a time in the West if that's the only way to get that music.

Quite an interesting list, not the usual LotR rubbish, but Miles Davis on No. 4 instead, lots of Herbie Hancock, and even Tom Waits and Paris, Texas.

Hmm. Just looked at the second half, and it's a lot more varied with some stuff that I just don't rate on there. But there's probably more on there that I've actually come across and rate (Taxi Driver, Candyman, Shaft, Get Carter)

    Interesting list.

Presumably scores of the 80's and 90's simply weren't worth the celluloid they were committed to.

And as for the LoTR soundtrack being crap - well I guess this list really is right up your alley UL. Obtuse, dated and trying just that little bit too hard.

It's chronological with the earliest entries first, and the contemporary stuff at the end. It's not in a subjective order.

Some good calls in there and the list has certainly made me want to take a trip to Blockbusters. A mythical Blockbusters that stocks more than new release tat.

I don't have to try too hard not to like lowest common denominator drawing board music, don't worry.

Nice to see you've taken my bait this time, btw. :D

What like Bladerunner, Once Upon a Time in America, Candyman, Twin Peaks, Memento and Virgin Suicides?

And as for obtuse, excuse me while sit on the cutting edge of hipdom and listen to a bit of John Williams.

It'd be interesting to read the liner notes in the article and see how they came up with the list. I think they are probably looking at soundtracks that act as an entirity, within and without rather than "Here is the sad music" "Here is the fight music" "Here is the romance music" "Here is the nu-rock credit music" and envelope a range while keeping hold of the theme.

Shame Yann Tiersen wasn't in there. I really like his stuff.

You've got to love Mojo. You'd think they'd get a nosebleed listening to anything remotely recent.

There's lots of recent stuff on the list - O Brother Where Art Thou, Virgin Suicides, Memento, Out of Sight, Ice Storm, Philipp Glass - would be a bit werird to have even more stuff from the last 10 years, seeing that movies with soundtracks exist since the early 20th century.

A nice change to the lists you see usually that show any crap just because it's recent, no matter if it really has any lasting quality.

I can see the argument for only putting tried and tested soundtracks in the higher places - they've obviously aged well - but I don't think it's justification for leaving newer stuff at the bottom end of the rankings. It's the way Mojo goes about justifying its selection, though: Mojo is all about looking backwards.

You can't get any more modern than Miles Davis, which is on No. 4. Most recent stuff sounds very dated in comparison. ;-)

They're in chronological order, as the good captain pointed out.

Seems like a pretty safe selection to me. A shitload of Barry, Bacharach, Morricone, Herrmann, Schifrin and blaxploitation soundtracks. Pretty much what you'd expect from such a list.

The only soundrack which is missing that I'd expect to be there is Nino Rotas soundtrack for The Godfather.

    Ah, my mistake.

Doesn't change the fact that Mojo looks back before looking forward.

So, spill the beans: which progressive soundtrack have they missed? :-)

    Well let's see:

Andromeda Strain: Unnerving distorted electronica. First of it's kind.

Alien /Aliens: Haunting bursts of horns fused with low frequency synthesised effects. One climactic has been used more times on movie trailers than any other.

Akira: Bizarre vocal and percussive mix. Totally sets the scene.

Dune: Oddly pleasing mix of synthesisers, SOft Rock and traditional orchestral.

And they're just the sci-fi entries. :) All far too 'low brow' for mojo and UL I realise - still I like 'em, and certainly 'progressive' in my interpretation. Although not quite 'Underwater Jazz' or 'Music played entirely with elbows'. :D

To be fair, after reading the list again it does make a little more sense. I can forgive the thin spread of choices across the years. I think perhaps a list of 200 would have done a better job, and perhaps enabled the article to avoid appearing as snooty.

It's getting a bit tiresome now. You don't have to stress each time how inferior you feel. You can work on your taste, you know? :D
