@darkmorgado Not a classic, but played it again recently and it was enjoyable to play, a la thread title, although nostalgia might have me slightly biased. I hundred percented it back in the day so you can imagine the time I put into it.

I think I did similar with the original Spyro back when it came out, which took a while especially considering some of the massively annoying rabbit chase things.

Grandia and Metal Gear Solid are 2 games I've been playing a lot on my phone recently. Still hold up really well too.

@darkmorgado I hundred percented all of those again at christmas (the trilogy was a tenner on psn), they hold up so well, besides the graphics. Some excellently hidden pieces of jewellery and items. Music is also some of my favourite to this day.

Enjoyed and completed Metal Gear Solid is great.

Also tried but did not complete:
Kula World which is still pretty good but a tad clunky in the controls and game structure.
Spyro: ok but seems rather basic
Crash bandicoot: The running bits are still good but the horizontal bits not so much.
Vagrant Story: Looked intriguing but i got distracted.

Time Crisis 1 is pretty much the last 3D light gun shooter that rewarded accuracy. They got steadily more machine-gunny after that and now Time Crisis 4 is one of the most obtuse things you could want to play.

Don't discount Smackdown 1 & 2 either. The series now isn't highly regarded at all but the originals were great and caused a frenzy amongst gamers of a certain age.

My other favourites have been mentioned in particular the Final Fantasies, though by any chance are you planning to play these on a PS3? If so, let me be the first to recommend you buy them from the US PSN store instead of the UK store which will flog you the awful, awful PAL versions (Square's disdain of the PAL region was legendary back then).

Future cop LAPD is still pretty good. Loved it back in the day as well

Always tempted to pick up a vita to start a new ps1 collection.

I downloaded G police a few years back, and that hasn't aged well at all :(

but most games have been mentioned, MGS and FF still play great today.

Have to add another vote for Crash Bandicoot 1. I really think the art style in the game is great; it's kind of intentionally blocky which means its not so much of a jolt to go back to 90's graphics. For anyone who never played it, it's such a good platformer and gets hard as nails if you go after all the gems.

Though I may well have more than a little nostalgia bias. That game virtually was my childhood :)

MGS is still great. I recently made the mistake of loading up Theme Park and lost a week.

A couple that have been said before but I agree are:

Doom - the best soundtrack and sound effects of any Doom release ever was on the PS1, absolutely awesome. 2 x PS1s, 2 x copies of Doom, 2 x TVs back-to-back and 1 x link cable (+ pizza and beer) made for some of the greatest nights of gaming that I've ever had.

Destruction Derby - absolute perfection for what it was, seriously loved this game. Glorious when you got to 2 cars left, both smashed up to the point where they were traveling at about 5mph going around in circles :D Ridiculous yet brilliant.

Soul Edge is still decent and GTA 2 doesn't suffer from aged graphics (though the PC version was superior).

The FMV sequences on the PSX look like utter cack now, used to look so... realistic back then.

A few hold up OK, like the Soul Edge intro (I am amazed they had Taki's jiggly tits back then but it's Japan, so not a real surprise.)

What o couple of others have said. Metal Gear Solid is still bloody marvelous.
And Final Fantasy 7, 8 and 9 are still great too but them random battles really do take the piss after 40-50 hours into the game. Just walking down a corridor becomes the most infuriating thing ever when a random battle pops up and all you wanna do is crack on with the story.

Resident Evil 2 is still hugely playable and quite frankly, still the best Resi game yet.

Legacy of Kain : soul reaver, it was a fantastic action/adventure game with metroidvania style. An atmosphere, good musics to illustrate the world and the different places, gameplay and story was good then you feel very immerged in this world and got a good sense of freedom.

The 2nd best PS1 FPS after Doom.
What about Quake 2 and Alien Resurrection? Doom, Final Doom and Exhumed are quite basic engines.

Also if first person shooters includes space combat games there are also other games worth considering.

Too many to mention, the last couple pages pretty much covers it!

I have little PS1 binges here and there, recently 100% finished Spyro 2 and it was excellent, can't believe I missed it at the time, lovely game.

I sank about 150 hours into final fantasy tactics over 2 playthroughs.   What a game.  Imported it from the states.  Still remember to this day the awesome fight against a team made up only of chemists.  What a dirty trick to play.
