Registered 17 years agoIt looks hideously uncomfy. Once again, a Nintendo announcement that leaves me with a resounding "Huh?". -
For the lazy (of which Zomoniac is one)

Hold on, that's not a clamshell design. It looks fucking stupid as hell! -
Where does it slot into? -

There will be an attachment for that, RRP £40.

I can only imagine they've realised that young kids always have the 3D switched off and are targeting them... -

Well it is these days. I'm definitely in the "I'm not angry, I'm just disappointed" frame of mind with them these days. It's like they had a half-baked idea (remove the 3D! Genius! Gimmick the removal of a gimmick! Amazing!) and then decided to make it even more stupid by getting rid of the best part of the DS series of consoles (the clamshell design) and then failing to take advantage of the space they've made at the sides AND make it into a stupid wedge shape.
It's really not!
What the fuck is happening at Nintendo? -

I do play with the 3D off for Monster Hunter, but with Fire Emblem I usually had it on. -

I don't think targeting people who already have a 3DS is a good strategy.

Registered 13 years agoUgly, removes the main selling point of the 3DS, and makes some games impossible (like Phantom Hourglass where you need to close the machine to "print" a mark on the bottom screen).
Seriously is everyone at Nintendo drunk 24/7 now? The Virtual Boy was a better idea than this and the Wii U! -

Registered 19 years agoI can't believe how ugly and huge it is. As a concept I'd be all for a cheaper, 2D-only 3DS, but that thing is truly hideous.

Registered 13 years agoA 3DS minus the pointless 3D would have interested me. Shame that isn't the clam shell design of the others, that thing looks ugly. Also, no extra circle pad means yet another CPP add on has to be produced?! -

Registered 8 years agoI know you all hate the design (i don't mind it really, it's like a chunky dual screen tablet) but really the price is the main draw. The 3d strains my little brother's eyes, and we'll both be wanting pokemon x and y, and seeing as he doesn't have his own 3ds yet, this looks just perfect to get him into the 3ds market, and for our (my) trading/battling needs. Although the lack of second stick built in is beyond ridiculous. -
From the adverts it's clearly aimed at young kids who play Pokemon constantly.
That said, I'm not entirely against it myself. I've been sort of wanting a 3DS, but can't be arsed to shell out over $200 for the privilege of the console plus games, and have zero interest in the 3D gimmickery. It not being clamshell doesn't particularly bother me either. -

Registered 19 years agoAnother thing I've just noticed is that it only appears to have one speaker, so I'm guessing mono sound without headphones. -

Registered 17 years agoSaw EG's tweet about this, figured there must have been a typo. But no, it's a real new 3DS! And absolutely hideous. Oh well, since it's supposed to be super-budget they didn't have to spend to much time on the design. -

The 3D stopped being the main selling point ages ago, and that bit in PH is the only instance I can think of where any DS/3DS game actually requires the clamshell design. Granted, it also happens to be one of the DS' most high-profile games, but still.
Ugly, removes the main selling point of the 3DS, and makes some games impossible (like Phantom Hourglass where you need to close the machine to "print" a mark on the bottom screen).
I remember there was a similar issue with Boktai on the GBA, where the SP model couldn't support the game properly because of an add-on. And a situation with a music game (Guitar Hero?) on the DS too. -

Hotel Dusk and that game where you're stranded on the desert island require the clamshell as well. I'm sure there's more, but I'm blanking right now.
Anyway, I get the "it's cheap and for kids" bit, that's cool... But they should have kept the clamshell, it's a good screen protector. Mind you, I've seen plenty of original DS consoles with the screens absolutely gouged full of marks by kids with their styluses so I suppose even then the clamshell doesn't really matter.
I dunno, it doesn't look right. -
I look forward to the Nintendo 4DDOMG. I'd tell you more but I'm NDA on the PDQ.
