First time you reach jungle he will ask for bombs, give him one. Second time you reach jungle he will ask for a rope, give him one. Third and final time he wants 10000 gold (so make sure you've been treasure hunting and not spent it all in shops) After this he will unlock shortcut straight to the jungle. I started off hating this game I then watch Tom doing the daily challenges on Eurogamer youtube and went back to it. Now I "get it" and hopelessly addicted. Take it slow and steady. It's the platform equivalent of dark souls. |

Funnily enough, I felt the same when I tried the 360 demo ages ago so god knows why I bought it on Vita but I'm glad I did. It works much better for a quick game or two.
What am I missing with this?
To me, it feels like an overpriced 90's platformer.
I love the randomness of it, had some great near escapes (boulder took one bounce and skimmed my head!) but it never seems unfair.
Is it worth the risk picking up those Ankh/idol things btw? Had the boulder take out the shopkeeper just now, was dropping bombs on him from above but he just. wouldn't. die! -

Registered 12 years agoThis ghost that appears... Is he impossible to kill? Does it just mean you have to hurry up? That's a deal breaker for me if it is :/ -

Registered 12 years agoYup. After 2:30 minutes. It's so you don't dillydally/clear the place of all the treasure.
It is quite daunting, but once you get used to the fact that it's gonna happen, you realize just how long 2 and half minutes really is. Usually I have the damsel saved with time to spare to backtrack and gather more treasure and I'm no expert. -

Registered 17 years agoYou can stun the ghost with the camera but only for a brief second. Also if the ghost passes over large jewels they turn into diamonds which are far more valuable. -

I think if you are a gamer of a certain vintage this is just joyous. It reminds me of a super refined Fred on the Spectrum. -
Don't remember that. I played and loved Rick Dangerous on the PC. -

The ghost always reminds me of bubble bobble.
I'm so rubbish at this game, but it never feels unfair, and always feels enjoyable. -

See my three steps at the top of this page. If you've already done that the shortcut will be on the screen where you first go through the gate to start the game. Shortcut is off to the left.
So I paid for a shortcut, how do I use it? -

Registered 17 years agoCaved in (heh), bought the game, and enjoying it. Still not seeing where all the 10/10 love comes from but it's certainly addictive. And the system of unlocking shortcuts is very cleverly done, so it feels like you're always making some progress. I've managed to get as far as the Ice Caves.
I've been playing it on the PS3 though, the fact that the game pretty much instantly syncs the save with the Vita version is brilliant. I can see myself putting a lot of time into this on my commute.

Yeah, the EG review points out that the randomness and unpredictability is what makes the game so good, and a lot of the joy comes from discovering things yourself and working out mechanics etc. Which is a pretty long-winded way of saying - please make use of spoiler tags.

Registered 16 years agoSo, managed to unlock the shortcut to 2-1, but now I miss the caves! So much easier to get items (except the boomerang, which I like very much) in the caves...
I think my favourite so far has been the spring shoes, so many times you want to jump a little higher (and don't want to use the rope). -

Registered 17 years agoWow - you guys are doing really well. I've only managed to get to 2-1 twice!
I get greedy in terms of treasure or rescuing the damsel. -

Registered 18 years agoBest plan with items I find is to buy everything once and try them out, much more fun than reading faqs etc.
The tunnels are great - I'm yet to reach 3-1 once yet, but the tunnel allows me to familiarise myself with 2. I'll do the same with 3 and 4 eventually, until hopefully I'll be able to actually play through the whole lot. -

Registered 18 years ago2-2 is the best for me so far. There are some scary creatures out there. Love it. -
2-1 for me. Got a bit nervous as I didn't know what constituted spikes etc in the jungle.
I always rescue the damsel as I thought that's what I was supposed to do. Grab what treasure I can on the way to her, deposit her in the exit (excuse the misogyny) and then do a little more treasure hunting before moving on. I seem to be useless at judging how long I'm taking though often stressing about the ghost only to see I took 1:44 to get through.
Loving it, but it did sting to get sent back to 1-1 when I reached 2-1 that one time
