Sideways

Went to see this last night. If you liked The Royal Tenembaums, About Shmidt and Lost in Translation, then I think you’ll enjoy it. It’s another one of those “It’s funny because life is funny, and it’s sad because life is sad” films.

I thought it was ok. Parts of it made me laugh a lot, the supporting actor (no idea who he is) was superb, but overall it left me feeling a little meh. I’m a bit bored of those films now I think, need a good twisty plot based film now.

Still, I’d recommend it on the strength of the performances.

/gives one and a half thumbs up

This goes to show that I shouldn't believe Empire's reviews, as Sideways came across as being pretty spectacular. Still wouldn't mind seeing it anyway.

Is Paul Giamatti's the fella you're thinking of, K?

I have a chart that compiles the best of the year lists from all the reviews sites and paper columns.

This film sits atop the list with 174 mentions. Just below it is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind with 141.

Well, I wouldn't trust my review anymore than Empire's. It is a good film, probably a really good one in parts, but just wasn't that amazing IMHO. And no, Giametti is great, but it's the other guy that steals the show.

A mister in my work saw it and said it was great and boring in equal measures, although from the sounds of it the great parts he spoke of had something to do with amidala getting her mams out, imho she needs to put them back into the incubator till they are formed properly. More spanish omlette than fried eggs, not that i've seen them, i'm guessing :p

I think that's Garden State you're thinking of. She's not in this. Didn't spot them in that either to be honest, although that might have been the fried egg factor.

Saw this yesterday. I agree with kalel, a bit dull really. It seems to be getting excellent reviews from everyone but I can't really understand why. It's one of those films about a misunderstood, socially inadequate guy, and although it's got some funny parts, I don't really find myself caring about what happened to anyone.

Oh and the fairly frequent five minute dialogs about wine started to grind rather quick.

    2 stars

If its anything like The Royal Tenembaums, I think I'll avoid. Never have I seen such a navel-gazing, directionless meandering of apathy, acted out by the most unlikeable characters! Instantly forgettable IMO.

The comparison with Lost in Translation really puts me off. That's one of the films that seems to be getting a lot of love, but does nothing to me. A dull and undeveloped storyy that I just couldn't connect to. If Sideways is the same, I'm probably going to steer clear.

    Et tu, Marilena!

If I hear one more person complain about the lack of a story in Lost in Translation, I think I'll have to explode. ;-)

Sorry, Lou. I think said it at that time too. Maybe you see something beyond what the film shows, but I just don't. I only see two people that are unhappy and estranged for no real reason at all.

There's a lot to discuss here, maybe, but I'm not sure if it's worth it, as I don't think we'll ever agree.

Now I think Sideways looks good. But Lost In Translation? I mean that movie had no story. A proper movie should have a a story.

NOTHING can be as badly written, over-acted as the pile of pure cock that was Magnolias! Anyone else remember this inane drivelling torture?

Na, you're not putting Magnolia in the category as Lost in Translation and Sideways. Not on my watch!

I love it. It's an uplifting story about a bunch of loosely connected interesting people. Oh, and it's funny.

Thanks for the heads-up on Sideways. I was looking forward to it, but now think I'll wait for DVD. I hated Royal Tenenbaums and spent 2 hours waiting for something to make me laugh. About Schmidt looked like the kind of thing 60 year olds find funny (like "As Good As It Gets") and Lost in Translation was very good but over-hyped.

I'm afraid I have to add my vote to the 'Magnolia was not great' campaign. Anyone can write a screenplay that interconnects disparate characters. Tom Cruise displayed more ham than a pig farmer on auction day, and the ending was so random it felt like they'd run out of film and just thought frogs falling from the sky would be "clever".
Falls a LONG way behind Memento or Donny Darko or Elephant, in that "fractured storyline" kind of theme.*

I watched this the other night. I thought it was really funny, and there is such good interaction between the characters espescially Church as Jack, he really comes across as an utter wanker, but completely loveable. The talk about wine as well is really well done, it's not boring and you feel the characters passion for it seep through.

I wouldn't compare it at all with the Tenenbaums!

I thought that was OK but I really, really liked Sideways. It was very touching and the first film in a long time to make me laugh out loud(The car crash bit).

I laughed a LOT at Sideways, it was very refreshing to watch an American comedy that didn't rely on nob gags and grossnes for it's laughs.

Personally I couldn't recommend it enough. Don't listen to this lot! Go and see for yourself.

Is that the bit where Spoiler

It's not really followed up, but I think it just shows that they are really alike, just as nasty and shows that he isn't just a loser in his head, he is actually a loser.

You wouldn't have that chart online by any chance, would you?
