Earth strap? Metal 'tag' with an earth wire (green or green & yellow wire coming out of it) If so just undo it yourself and put it back on afterwards, the meter guy is just playing a game of "not my job mate" if it's really just the earthing that needs to be removed temportarily.

Well he then said the reason for the meter not working is because water has come in because of how it's positioned, so potentially a smart meter would be broke in x months anyway.

Ring the distribution network in your area, not your provider. That is surely their problem.

    Just reading about that

"You must contact your local electricity distributor and gas transporter to do the work. They’ll usually charge at least £400 for the work, but it could be over £1,000 - it depends on how much work needs to be done."

Bloody eeeelll. I think I'm just going to leave it. They charged me £14 last month for gas and electricity lol. It's up to them to sort it out.

They're the cost for moving your meter because you *want* it moved, e.g. it knackers up your plans for an extension. You don't want it moved - you want them to either ensure it's water tight or, as a last resort, have it moved. I don't see why this should cost you.

I'm curious why it's not in a suitable position - most houses built over the last 50 years have their meters on external walls with a flimsy bit of plastic trim protecting them from the elements and meters are built to withstand some abuse based on that. Given the installers reluctance to undo an earth strap for quarter of an hour, I'd imagine they're talking out of their arse or maybe you just need a new mater cabinet?

I'll probably phone Ovo and complain that they need to do some adjustments/fix the meter rather than sending out someone who clearly doesn't give a shit because he's paid per job.

Yup, a few boundry issues. The last outstanding thing is on the seller's solictor apparently.

Do you mean exchange is on the 13th? No paper work at all? You will have had the mortgage contract, solicitors contract and questionnaire and the deed thing to sign. If it is like the exchange I just went thru.
I really don't know. Solictor and estate agent both said complete, but I really can't see that being realistic.

Buildings insurance shouldn't take long, it was wills that took a while for us to sort out.
Buildings insurance takes about 30 minutes online. I didn’t have to sort out a Will.
Yeah, that's fair. I'm just feeling there's a deadline but with no one getting anything in place.

Where is the property? Just saw an article on bbc news that says the average completion time in London is almost 6 months. We will be done in just over 3, so somebody has to do it in 9!
South Manchester. I think it's just had a troubled chain, since the sellers took ages to make an offer on an other place. They also changed their mind, and now there's no longer chain.

I think my solicitor said something about it taking him at least 10 days between exchange and completion to get everything sorted.

Well, it looks like it is moving at break neck speed. I'm looking to exchange on Tuesday, and possibly complete. My solicitor and estate agents reckon it could happen.

On a side note, my deposit is currently in a savings account. Should I move it a current account before handing it over? Since the money needs to move quickly.

@consignia speak to your solicitor, moving it to another account they haven't checked out may slow things down while they make sure you aren't a money launderer.

@consignia I think you should (unless you can do money transfers from your savings account) but as said, check with your solicitor.

Cheers, I was going to move the stuff in prep, but I'll speak to the solicitor first thing about it.

Cor, what a drama. Got all the paper work yesterday. Got told this morning I had to exchange and complete today as the mortgage company accidentally wired the money through yesteraday. So moving a large amount of money took loads back and forth with the bank. But got it all cleared just before todays completion deadline, and I've just picked up the keys.

    Happy! But shattered.

Congrats! I found the stress of the buying and selling process was soon a distant memory (too busy thinking about all the broken stuff in the house I'd bought :)).

    Not in my experience. :(

Talking of which, 5 different flooring companies coming to quote tomorrow to see if they can fix Barratt's clownshow.

The UK system on house selling is bonkers. Absolutely bonkers.

Me and the missus are stuck in the limbo of, having a buyer... having an offer accepted but the seller not having anywhere to go. Its been about 3 weeks now and i think our buyer is starting to get cold feet.

Being part of a chain fucking sucks.
