Got their 5% and Help To Buy? :s
A young couple are buying my flat for over £400k. No idea how the hell they can afford it.
Was even more confused by the fact I entered a £700k+ bidding war on the place I am buying and the other couples involved were First Time Buyers. -

The waiter pipes look unsupported, the mains cables aren’t clipped to anything, and the bits they’ve cut can’t be replaced properly as there’s fuck all to attach a new board to - you want a joist either side of the board otherwise it’ll move and crack eventually

Depends how old they are?! We rented for years, lived abroad for a bit and made our savings (were able to live off one salary), which we piled into our stupid London prices house two years ago (now there is very little left at end of month...). Also, you can get a 40 year mortgage with very low interest rates

The monthly mortgage is like half what rent would be on our place, and more than half of the mortgage is going towards repayment! -

...and it's all been cut out because they fucked up putting the pipes in so the heating wakes us up. -

Registered 15 years agoCouple of years, as I need to save up enough to make the next jump. But yes, very much sooner rather than later.
Edit - One up-side is that everyone that comes here (and doesn't know about the nightmares) says something positive about how quiet the area is, or how this house has a load of space around it, or it's got surprisingly big garden etc. With the bonus of a highly rated primary school within walking distance, hopefully it'll not be too hard to shift.

Registered 14 years agoyah I'm thinking rent then buy when the market eventually collapses again
People are clearly overpaying and will eventually default and bubble will burst again

Registered 10 years agoNot going to collapse anytime soon. We're in the middle of buying selling and every viewing is held at the weekend on one day.
Sealed bids up to 15 viewings in one day. Its a sellers market and simply not enough properties going up to meet the demand. -

I’d say it’s likely people who convinced themselves they could afford a bigger mortgage than they realistically could. Or people who bought a house and then got hit hard by the pandemic.

Registered 15 years agoHowever, once the pandemic has died down and people get back to some sort of regular normality I expect things to change again - dogs abandoned, people selling places with big gardens that they can't cope with etc. -

Registered 15 years agoMost people around here seem to be turning their gardens into astroturf / patio abominations. It's all the rage.
Edit - More cutting going on here today. FFS. Felt like I had a hangover when I woke up this morning, I think I was grinding my teeth in the night.

Registered 18 years agoI'll probably go artificial grass at some point. The ground here is clay-based and with a North facing garden, everything gets very soggy for 5/6 months of the year that the garden is practically unusable. Long way off that but I think is a serious consideration when we get round to it. It's such a small patch of grass anyway. -

Registered 15 years agoFirst pic is screws in stairs completely missing what they were trying to screw into (first attempt to fix creaking stairs).
Second pic is where they've put the cutout for the stairs in the wrong place, so the wood is touching the stairs anyway (different floor to first stairs).
Third pic is a water pipe being held in place by a screw rather than a clip, and a waste pipe that was pushing against the plasterboard (which they did manage to cut when they removed the board). -
For fuck sake that is just pathetic.
There is no way I thought that was a stair in the first image as it looks as though it's chipboard - I would never build a stair with chipboard!
No wonder you're grinding your teeth it's fucking pathetic. Sorry you're still going through all this.
