Hey gang, I've decided that I'm going to use a bit of my bonus in May to get myself a new guitar (yeah yeah I know I'm trying to move house, but I fancy treating myself!). Now, I havent decided if I want to get a new acoustic or a new electric but both my guitars need replacing, and I do have a nice big amp I've hardly use. Can someone suggest some good places online to look at guitar models and prices? |

no, but then again it was rather cheeky .gif)
Our house is going on the market this Saturday, so I'll be doing some hardcore house searching, and offering thereafter.
thanks for asking

Registered 20 years agoIf you want the wife will have a look about to see if there any properties about that she knows are in nice areas? She likes doing that sort of thing for some reason.
Don't know about online shops but there is a nice large looking music equipment shop in Fleet. -

You could do worse than give them a go.

Sorry to hijack this thread but I'm thinking of learning to play the guitar again. I say again as when I was 10 I learnt for about 3 years then quit when I was 13. 13 years later I can't remember any of it but would like to learn again.
Which discipline would you all recommend?
Classical? Bass? Non-classical i.e. Noel Gallagher stylee learning all the chords.
Is it unreasonable to learn all three?
Website suggestions? -

I'd go along to Bluewater (you still live in Kent, right) and actually go play the guitars. Find 'the one' and then go buy it online. Otherwise you could end up with something you hate.

She cost me a bit, but when you find the one you find the one. -
Can anyone recommend a good cheap but without being too crap, guitar for beginners?
And is it reasonable to try and teach yourself or should I really be looking into getting lessons? -

We'll all bring guitars! -
Cool thanks Harry. I think the apprehension towards teaching myself is that there's no-one to say "you don't do it like that, you do it like this" etc.
I would definitely like to get into playing an instrument again - finding the time is another thing altogether but never mind that.
So which discipline would you recommend then Harry? -

Registered 18 years ago@binks, like nemmy said, try and get to a decent store rather than doing it online. prices for musical instruments on the web never seem all that competitive and being able to play the guitar, see how the neck feels, hear how much better a wolfgang sounds than a jem etc. is very valuable when it comes to getting something special.
@ hairy, lessons with a decent teacher are always a good thing. lessons with a bad teacher can put you off an instrument, so if you decide to look for a teacher try to get a few local recommendations, and be prepared to swap around a bit if you don't get what you want out of it.
teaching yourself is good too though. other than a few mates giving me pointers i'm self taught and not too bad. there's plenty of great tutorial dvds around to get you on the right tracks with technique and stuff.
my best advice is get hold of a decent tab book or two from your favourite band so you have stuff to learn that really inspires and excites you. for me it was van halen's right here right now book, which has some great simple riffs to learn for early gratification, but also offers up some really complex stuff that i'll never be able to play right, so that sort of selection offers a suitable challange at every level of skill. and the tapping bit from eruption sounds and looks cool, but is an utter piece of piss to learn

Registered 18 years agooh, and the discipline you learn should be whatever you like listening to. if you dont listen to classical, there's no point learning it. if you're a thrash fan, then you won't be starting with bluesgrass.
bass is a whole different thing again, it's more about the rhythm and less about the lead, melody and hooks that most people notice first when listening to stuff. the question you need to ask yourself is what do you like to listen to, and what instrument will let you replicate it. -

Registered 20 years agoI was self-taught, but I found that only got me so far and I finally went for lessons.
The teacher was excellent, he understood what I wanted to play and demonstrated where we would get to if I put in the time. I didn't and, to my eternal shame, I lost contact with that teacher. He was brilliant and I was a shit student.

I think if you can play for the joy of playing and you hold the guitar lines in songs above all else...then you'll continue to love it 20 years on. My friend is desperate for me to learn piano as I'm quick at picking up the patterns, but I can't get excited by it. It doesn't move me, it's just notes. Whereas something like...Crossroads (Clapton) I can listen to over and over. -

Registered 18 years agoI'm after a new acoustic meself.
Anyone got any recommendations around the £200-£300 mark? -
Well I think I've decided.
Being that I'm never likely to go gigging, I really dont have a need for an electric guitar. So I'm going to check out some acoustic ones.
I have a fender acoustic at the moment that cost me £100 back in the day, and has lasted me ok, although it was never a particularly great guitar.
Does anyone have any recomendations?

Registered 19 years agocan i recommend GAK
tis where i purchased my numerous guitars, they are based in brighton and their prices are abotu the best that i have found on the web, plus they have a huge selection and are very quick on the shipping front, or if you live near brighton, pop down and see them.
Someone asked about accoustic guitars. i have a Harvey Benton Electro accoustic solid top with a lovely sound to it. It was a present so i don't know abotu the cost or where to get them but i can really recommend it -
Yeah, I'm with Nemesis on this - go play in a guitar shop and then pikey it over the net.
I got a few from the US 'cos what's £550 here is £200 if you import it.
