Burning ambition

Thanks to a wise forumites suggestion (cant remember who), I need to get my cd collection stored digitally. Got around 5-600 cd's and an Acer travelmate C300 tablet PC with burner through work.

Am I right in thinking it best to buy an external h/d for 110squid and then get 'em burned via the lappy?

Does anyone know what it might cost for a company to do it for me?
