Going on what e know already. The PS4 uses the same HDD has the PS3 (2.5" 9.5mm). That basically limits us to at this present time in writing, 1TB.

Now, there are other otions that have picked up that may come to the PS4 such s this.

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Slim-PS3-Hard-Disk-HD-Extender-eSATA-interface-connect-HD-enclosure-x3-u-/170909137353

Now I know this doesn't look very tidy and would surely void the warranty if anything happened but with all he rumours going around that we are looking at about 20-30GB per install, is 500GB really enough? and more to the point, is the maximum of the current maximum of 1TB limiting?

    Thoughts?

I don't think we needed a new thread...

I disagree. That's a general thread, this thread focuses on a specific topic.

Fair enough. You'd still be better asking / discussing it in the main thread though. There's not that much PS4 info / chatter right now so things are being discussed in the main thread - basically, there's no need for a thread about every nuance just yet as there's just not that much info flying around.

I'd say your more likely to get answers / thought's in the main thread.

25-30gb file size for games? Or that extra kind of assistant/secretary install? If it's the latter, 500gb is sfa :-o

Aren't all PS4 games full mandatory install - up to 50GB each? Sounds like 1TB will be essential.

My god. It'll take me a solid week to download anything.

2.5" Hard drives is no bad thing considering how popular SSDs are becoming. What I want to know is if the PS4 with an SSD installed in it will show significant performance boosts.

@senso-ji - I'm sure Digital Foundry will do that kind of test quite soon after launch.

In what it can do, it will make a difference. The PS4 uses SATA3 interface(not SATA1 like PS3 or SATA2 like X1) so the SSD will work as well as the OS filesystem and game's data access pattern will allow.

    @Flying_Pig

I thought the feb reveal of PS4 said all disc games will buffer through the HDD as optional install and network games will download while playing.

Thinking about it though, the 400GB 16 layer blu-ray reading capabilities of PS3 and Ps4 will make Phil Harrison's inevitable digital download future a pipe dream again if they make AAA games with anything like 100GB of data next-gen, making downloading and installing limited to indy and AA stuff.

Sony were talking about PSN for PS4 a while back and said they were working on compression for large files, if you look at Steam you can often have 2gb downloads that install to 10gbs of drive space.

As for the drive size, I can't imagine 1tb is going to be the largest HD to fit in a PS4, they already have a 2tb 12.5mm drive and a 1tb SSD.

Saying all that, as long as they're hocking Blu-Ray's I think disc's will by the primary way of buying AAA on PS4.

That's horrendous. I really hope that isn't true. 1TB wouldn't even last that long otherwise.

Do you really play that many games at a time? Finish a game, delete the game data but keep the save data intact should you ever want to come back to it. Easy.

Yeah but for some that's quite a farce. I do see where you are getting at though.

The PS4 is SATA2. Edit: I realise the post I'm quoting is old but for anyone that comes into the thread and doesn't look at post dates I wanted to clarify.

I bought a 1TB drive to install as soon as my console turns up, and then I'll stick the 500GB PS4 drive into my PS3 in order to support PS+ downloads.

I'm reasonably confident that my 1TB will be enough to last me. I only intend to have 2 or 3 MP games installed and 1 or 2 SP games at a time. I'm not going to collect lots this gen and focus on playing the things I buy instead.
PS+ will be my back-up collection of things I want to try or play when I have time between the stuff I buy. Luckily, I have a decent net speed so downloading 50gb shouldn't take more than a few hours which means I don't need to hoard.

I hope Sony add external hard drive support at some point because I have two 500 GB external HDDs that are ideal for using with the Xbox One and PS4. I'm not sure I want the hassle of having to swap out a hard drive after a few months and then having to reinstall/redownload all the content onto it again.

I was going to wait for my warranty to run out then upgrade (you never know with new equipment) the hard drive to a 2tb.
But this depends also if I can store my... ahem.. rather large adult education film collection, like I did on my now defunct ps3.

Seagate have just released the world's first 9.5mm 2TB drive. Previous ones have been around 12mm so good news peeps you can put in a 2TB and not ever have to worry again.

I know this is going to end up with the likes of 'who needs more than 640k of memory?', but will people really need more than 1tb of storage on the PS4? Do they really need more than 500gb?

They weren't going to support CDs or MP3s either but they've changed their minds about that. So there's every chance they will also support external hard drives at some point as well if only for media playback.

    SATA3.
Which is fully backwards compatible with earlier SATA implementations.

I probably don't, to be honest. I don't see me having more than 3 or 4 AAA games on the go at once at the absolute most, and indie PSN stuff should come with a smaller install size.
