| @sega It wouldn't work. The whole point of consoles is that the developers know precisely what hardware is in a system and can optimise games to run on it. It is why a game that is on both consoles and PC requires a PC far more powerful than the consoles to run the same game. Even if upgrades were an option developers would still make games with the weakest in mind as it would be the largest userbase. |

Yeah, you should get to pick all your internal parts. You should get to spend a day researching why DDR3-1333 is actually PC3-10600, then you should be able to buy non-working parts from china on ebay and then work out which drivers are conflicting and then you should get to do wattage calculations every time you want to add a new peripheral. Steering wheel = 30 watts? Better disable the sound card so you can retain electrolyte ageing at 20%.
@Rodney I knew someone would mention 32X or something in the next post. Meant more like removing and replacing internal parts every few years or so.
PCs have worked that way since the beginning. Surely it's time we had a simplified way of doing that for the home console market. -

Registered 14 years agoWhy wouldn't it work? I'm assuming the likes of Sony and Microsoft will still be manufacturing their own consoles. The upgrades would still only be available when they say. So kind of like the software generations as they are now, but with none of the past being lost because they're using the same architecture.
Unless you just think starting from scratch every five or six years is honestly the best way. I'm moving to PC so it won't be a problem for me from now on, but it pains me so much great software is soon to be forgotten and deemed no longer relevant. -
I'll...just keep my 360! Until I'm totally bored of it, and then sell and then rebuy 3 years later for retro lolz -

Registered 15 years agoI wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft go the Apple route & release slightly improved versions of the XB1 every year or so
ie my early ipod touch won't play any new games released, but my iphone does & it allows me to play the older titles I've bought & at some future point i know that my iphone wont run newer games,etc...
This would allow Microsoft to overcome the slower chipset the XB1 has vs the PS4 over time, although there's nothing to stop Sony doing the same

I really hope (and doubt) that happens. It'd be against the point of the console and '10 year cycle'.
