Hello we're listening but very busy! A new podcast is being recorded this week on Friday about Assassin's Creed 4, mainly, among other things. I'll pop in here later for a longer chat. |

@squarewings Great advice - thank you! We're using Audacity and Levellator to try and normalise it. We have mics with pop shields and a mixing desk. The hissing I think is from the aircon and the laptop. I'll try putting the laptop under the table tomorrow and somehow cutting the power to the aircon so it can't interfere.
Is Levellator the right sort of thing to use or is there a better way of squishing the audio levels together?
Cheers! -
@Phattso Hey! You know, if you're really up for doing another one, we'd love to have it. Not sure if serious though
-
@OxWearingSocks Thanks Ox. All taken on board. -
So, on to this week's show! We'll be talking about Assassin's Creed 4 and Batman: Arkham Origins as they're the big games being reviewed at the moment. We'll have reviewer Tom Bramwell in there to talk about them.
Anything you'd like us to cover?
In the latter part of the show, and spinning off of the successful game series angle, we'll be talking about what games didn't become series but really should have.
The middle part of the show is being nailed down. Any input you have about topics you'd like covered would be very welcome.
Thanks! -

Long shot, but I'd like to know if Ass Creed 4 on PC has all the bells and whistles promised for the new consoles or if Ubi gimped it like EA with FIFA14. They've been fairly good with PC support so hopefully it won't be shafted.

Registered 14 years ago@Bertie What mics do you have though? I listened back to a bit this morning and they just sound... bad. Maybe a bit of EQ in audacity would help this?
I'd highly recommend some nice condensers, they're so great for speech - you can hear how much tone comes into it in a recording like this:

Also - normalising and 'squishing' the audio can all be done in Audacity.
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Compressor
Here's their guide on it -
Maybe you'd have better results in Garageband with a MacBook though, the compressor in there is easy to use. -
@Phattso You hero! Thanks! -
We're going in... Tweet me (@Clert) during the podcast if you fancy putting me off! -
The second episode is recorded! There's a quite amazing part that covers Christian Donlan's idea for a video game. I'll work on making the quality of the audio better this time. Let's hope I can make a difference! -
@squarewings The microphones are Behringers. Two are Ultravoice XM8500s, one is a Super Cardioid XM1800s.
I have no idea about microphones. -

Registered 14 years agoyeah, those mics are pretty horrible (and they're very cheap).
The XM1800s should just be thrown away, you can get three of them for £27 online, I'd say any mic that can be manufactured in China then shipped to the UK for less than £9 isn't really worth using for anything other than a doorstop.
I think recording speech for broadcast is worth investing in, if you have those mics I'm guessing you have some kind of bad Behringer usb mixing desk too..
GAK in Brighton are pretty good and the people there would be able to point you in the direction of some much nicer broadcast style mics and a nicer usb interface.
Why not spend a little cash on gear and monetise the podcast through Squarespace / lovefilm like a lot seem to do? I'm sure people wouldn't mind hearing the minute or so of ads if it meant some decent quality recordings.

Agree: I take it almost as a given to hear adverts in my decent podcasts these days. Wouldn't make me want to not listen or go elsewhere for the sake of some ads.
I listen to the podcast on my weekly drive down to Sussex on a Thursday night - excited for it! -

Registered 8 years agoEnjoyed it - bit tinny and low fi but it was good. Didn't have the polish of the Videogamer podcast but good to get some different people's views on things. -
@squarewings We're using a Behringer USB Xenyx X1204 desk. How's that in the scheme of things? It's unlikely we'll be able to get some expensive new equipment in straight away. New mics may certainly be possible though. -
@Hootles Thanks! What is it you like about the Videogamer podcast - what would you like to see us do more of? -

As a starter I would invest in some better kit - sounds like your casting from inside a kettle drum.
I get better sound just recording ventrillo chatter! -
Hi, I agree with the sound quality, it's an issue, especially for a professional organisation. It might be worth considering your environment, a room with more soft furnishings in it could be a start, or getting some acoustic dampening materials.
There is a lot of hiss too, could be the crap mixer or it could be that someone is being ultra conservative with the gain and then boosting the lot at the end. Obviously the closer you record to the noise floor the more you'll boost that noise floor at the end.
Anyway, I think it's worth experimenting before the next one because a well recorded podcast does make a difference. Also, it isn't expensive to get equipment. -
By the way I haven't had a proper listen yet, could have been that some people were too far from the mic rather than a problem with the room as such. A small amount of natural reverb is ok, when it's taking over it starts to be a problem. Also having some people louder than others is annoying as you either have someone shouting in your ear or the others whispering. -
I must be an Idiot or something. I cannot find the podcast anywhere. -
Where can I find these? (The link in the OP has been broken for 2 weeks) -
I just search for Eurogamer in a podcast programme. Podkicker is good on android. -
