I think I was unclear: users care about their experience. A bad experience isn't mitigated - in users' eyes - by how hard the job is or how you strive to improve it. They care about how the service works The 'free service' is a red herring; it's a business that is indirectly funded by users via advertising. The crux is that your advertising model is damaging user perception of your business. Whether the cost of this damage is less than the income you derive from ads is up to you I guess. |

@BrokenSymmetry Is it a certain ad that is causing this? clearly this is unacceptable. But I can't block an ad without knowing the one in question, will try by looking at your territory now. -
@Jeepers Understood! hence why I am here.. you are right we need the users to provide content for users. Effectively we all rely on each other hence the outreach.
Keep me posted as I will do everything in my power to ensure your experience isn't a bad one. Hopefully this personal service all be it in relation to something that is seen as negative will continue to show we care about our community. -

Registered 18 years agoIt's actually a testament to my fondness for Eurogamer that I keep coming back *despite* how bloody awful it is on tablet. I know nothing of browsing analytics and all that gush, but given how much I hear how the vast majority of browsing is done via mobile devices these days, I'm genuinely floored how poor it's become on tablet. I think it's pretty damning that EG actually works better on a phone than on a larger screened device like a tablet. Yeah yeah, you can still use mobile view but it looks utterly retarded, like all those blown up phone apps in the early days of android tablets. -

Registered 13 years agoJust to chime in I have entirely dropped this site from my ipad browsing. Having to wait 60 Seconds while the site jumps around resizing then selling down for ten seconds only to jump around again as you try to click a link is genuinely the worst site experience I know.
The fact I still visit is a testament to the communities and the quality of the writing but even that can only lay so long before the terrible user experience sends me elsewhere. I know this sounds harsh but I honestly believe if this isn't fixed you will just keep losing the tablet market. -
It's perfect on my Nexus 7. No rogue ads

How is it perfect? Mobile view will still look retarded, HD view still needs lots of pinching, ads or no ads.
Perfect my ass. -
Mobile's fine for me, if a bit (a lot) ugly. I don't see ads at work as they've blocked them - I also use mobile view there as it's less obvious. Most of the time at home I use HD, but I also block OpenX ads too most of the time - full site takeovers are horrible. And that Outbrain thing ("more from around the web" stuff) gets blocked too. -

Mobile looks OK to me... Nice and clean compared to HD!

Access denied I'm afraid.
Is it mobile or HD view we're talking about? Mobile is reasonable on tablet, but totally a waste of space, is borderline teletext and screams blown up phone app - something we should've got past by now surely. It's also missing key features such as "Threads I've Posted In', the one omission that always pushes me back to HD view...before I then return to mobile view from frustration.
Edit: I can see it now, fair enough. Looks like that on iPad but is pretty unsatisfactory imo. This isn't an iPad Mini v Nexus 7 yawnfest, but maybe it appears more acceptable on a Nexus due to the narrower screen.

Eh, fair enough I guess. They do need a good tablet redesign, some sort of "portable" mode perhaps. -

Registered 18 years agoLike I say though, if mobile view had a "Threads I've Posted in" link I'd find it a lot more tolerable and probably wouldn't miss Portable view quite as much.
There is a workaround I suppose by clicking Follow on any threads I post in, but I'd likely never remember to do it.

@MrTomFTW "portable" mode? Madness. -

Registered 15 years agoMobile misses all of the formatting and linking too- I can't be bothered to manually type spoiler tags etc, hence I stick with "HD" view on an ipad. I agree with Ryan, it's comfortably one of the worst browsing experiences in any session of visiting favourite sites I might have.
On the rare occasion I get to sit down at a computer, the browsing experience is night and day.
It wouldn't be so bad if there were genuine communication on a wider scale, rather than just Benny (appreciate the reply, by the way), but, since the useable Portable view was nuked us, let's say, non-desktop users have just been left hanging. I'm not aware of any sort of roadmap, any specifics about this fabled re-design and it's delivery, just vague atsomepointness.
Fuck making jokes about Portable view anymore, the advertising side of Eurogamer is stepping up to the plate, how about some comment on this from the dev team please? -
@yegon 29% based on March's browsing statistics. -

@mcmothercruncher Have you seen the responsive design on the new VG247 and USGamer? I think this is something that will become more popular the next two years on the network.
Basically combines all three (Mobile, HD and Portable)and when you resize the window it will cycle through all three... its really cool! thank Craigo for that one.
In terms of communication you have to understand that any future updates we may or may not be working on have yet to be announced. To remain ahead of any competition here with must remain vigilant with what details we do share.
However this being said I am always happy to answer further questions or anything you want to talk about here to the best of my ability. I am not necessarily in the know about everything going on in the tech side of the room but in regards to ads I am your man! -

Registered 16 years agoI do appreciate the fact that you are almost certainly working on a responsive 'all-in-one' site, a la USgamer, you would be mad if you werent, but I find the crippling of existing functionality while you are doing it utterly baffling.
BBC HEAD WEB GUY: Ok dudes, we are going to be undertaking a complete overhaul of the site. Its probably going to take around a year and when its finisihed, its going to be awsome. Whats the first thing we should do?
PROJECT MANAGER: Remove the sports section of the existing site.
BBCHWG: Why?
PM: Because fuck you, thats why. -
Having dealt with many project managers that does sound extremely plausible. -

Registered 16 years agoYou might also want to look at some kind of load balancing too.. -
I just got an ipad at the weekend. This site is horrible on it (on safari). Like an epileptic ad frenzy on every page load. Sorry if it's old news but just chiming in. -
Duly noted! the Tech Team do take notice of what you guys are saying and I am sure any further feedback will be factored into all future and current projects. -
Not a complaint but more of an observation. The fact there's this kind of advert on EG is a little... sad.

Is this Eurogamer or Mumsnet? -

I can't get enough of those skin (peeling) flicks. -
I spend far more time than I ought to banning spammers posting their work from home ads from the comments, but now EG are actually getting in on the action?
Why do I bother again?

@MrTomFTW We blocked this first thing this morning... but with these advertisers when there is a will there is a way! just gotta stay on top of it for you guys.
However they do take into account cookies.. so chances are if you have been discussing it or posting they will target you directly. If you give your cookies a wipe you should see a whole new set of ads.
However we did discuss this throughout office this morning as to potential causes and solutions. -
Just loaded the site and a video started autoplaying loudly telling me to buy Titanfall. Eurogamer has always been one of the best gaming sites on the web for it's advertising being non-obtrusive. As I recall the site was quite proud about that. Why the sudden change of heart?
I always enjoyed coming here more than most other sites as I could come here without adverts shouting in my face to buy something. And the site is one of the best to navigate. I have to say I'm really disappointed if this is the way things are headed.
