    Hey Guys,

Quick update - I have been out of the office for a few weeks getting married, honeymoon etc. so had the ads management passed to a colleague temporarily while I was away.

Because of this (he had to learn how to traffic ads and the operate the ad system - which is tricky) a couple of minor blips were made on mobile over the weekend with Overwatch campaign - this should now be correct and he is fully aware of the button he forgot to press.

I gotta say he did a great job while I was away! not to mention he was working his job as well so lets give him a hand.

With the Taboola, I will get a block issued against that title - any more please let me know and I can get these removed from the network.

    Thank you for your patience!

    Cheers
    Ben
    Congrats :)

I use Crystal for ad blocking, I turn it off and on from time to time to see if things improve, but it seems as soon as an annoying ad is taken down another one pops up. The overwatch ad over the weekend was painful. Am I destined to continually turning Crystal on and off or will there ever be a time when acceptable adverts are the only ones used?

If I had the time and patience I'd be tempted to photoshop lots of Overwatch adverts onto the background in wedding photo, but I won't because it's a really nice picture.

    Congrats benny :)

@DFawkes Please feel free! I knew by posting the photo I would open myself to all sorts of ad related banter, but I just wanted to show were all human here at EG and you guys are our family.

I was about two bottles of aged scotch in by that point! the poor wife was holding me up by the end of the evening for photos, I have never had to endure that many photos before in my whole life.

    @markytonline83

Sorry to hear this! I believe our acceptable ads only operate through ABP as these are the guys that provide the service for us here, if I am honest as I am not an ad blocker (due to my line of work) I am not as clued up with what the individual providers show when it comes to each individual device.

Like I have a good idea, just no first hand means of checking every single ad blocker on every single device for every campaign.

So as a means of education if anything if there is ever an issue please reach out and let me know the device and what you are seeing so I can personally address these for you and hopefully create a better reading experience for you.

    Yep.

I'm having horrendous problems with the Doom and Cod adverts in Firefox

If I have the front page in one tab, and then open a story in another, it makes Firefox as sluggish as hell, the scripts crash and the quickest way out is to use Task Manager to kill Firefox

I'm going to go back to my old practice of blocking disruptive adverts to make the site usable.

I need to be honest the ads in the middle of the articles with mouse over sound are a bit annoying. Ok its a little niggle but scrolling through an article then getting blasted with sound for some game is jarring. Tempting me to switch the adblocker back on (not at that point yet, but you do seem open to listen to our whining) :)

@X201 Hey! This was noted and raised by myself to the advertising teams who supplied these - I mentioned they weren't necessarily sticking to our video spec load specs here and should consider revising which I hope they have (supplied by a third party ad tag).

Let me know if you continue to have issues but not to worry! I got your back on this one.

@onestepfromlost Thanks for being so patient with these, its massively appreciated. They actually finish tomorrow, they should be without sound though as default - out of interest what browser are you using so I can further test against it?

@KRadiation Not cool! out of interest is this still happening? I have had a full audit of everything our side that is video related on mobile and I haven't had any luck.

So my concern is that this is coming through an ad exchange somewhere.. what I have now done is blocked any ad technology that plans video on mobile through Google Ad Exchange which means issues like this should be prevented on your device.

@bennyw01 Could you do something about the ads with gagngly-legged creatures?

@BetterCallPaul Happy to.. which ads are they? is it Taboola (if so please sent me the title) or is it and actual ad unit?
  • Deleted user 19 May 2016 11:30:35
@bennyw01 Ta! Both Taboola - one is "15 animals you never want to meet" (which uses the same images as the older "15 animals you won't believe exists" - with a dog looking at two... things).

The other one had a big spider on it but I didn't catch the name as I scrolled past it as fast as possible :)

Uncharted ads (and Ratchet ads a few weeks ago) loading over top of front page including toolbar and first few articles. Don't seem to be able to collapse it either, if that should be possible.

    Dolphin HD browser on android.

@myiagros Is this still happening? I think we are going to have to issue a block against the browser here.

Will raise with the dev team now.

@bennyw01 Yup, sorry afraid so I have just check again for you.

The page loads fine with gaps for ads, then a small uncharted ad loads between the toolbar and "Popular now" section, then immediately expands as shown in the picture I included.

Edit: I have just noticed that if I rotate my device to landscape then the ad collapse back to fit properly, but going back to portrait expands it straight back over the content again.

Edit 2: Looks like it is actually the second Uncharted ad showing up at the top of the page in landscape, rather than where it should be between the "Popular now" and "Today" sections.

Just spoke to the dev guys, out of interest are you using Dolphin Jetpack? (sounds awesome). Apparently there is a known issue with this version that breaks the background images of the site where this image renders.

@bennyw01 Yes I was using it with Dolphin Jetpack. I have just tried with jetpack disabled and the ads then display properly.
Thanks. Given the offer of any sort of jetpack who would say no ;-)
