@Armoured_Bear Right, you want to unlock Temperence pronto. That's a great one. You need Guts level 3 for it, then you just use the phone on the counter in LeBlanc in an evening slot to dial the maid service. If you don't have Guts level 3, consider boosting for it fast - Big Bang Burger is your friend. Temperence is only available on Friday and Saturday nights, or occasionally on nights when it's raining, but the bonuses from it are great.

You should also try to unlock Fortune and get it to at least level 5. You need to spend 3 nights with the fortune teller in Shinjuku for that, paying 100k on the third visit for one of the magic stone thingies (you get it back later). At level 5, you get an ability that lets you boost the affection gains with any confidant.

You're really high with Death and about to get to the point where it needs a Mementos quest to progress. You can go slow on that one for a while.

You should be able to do loads of the fusions needed to level up strength now. Just google a guide - you'll power through it in minutes.

Heirophant is gated at 5 until you fully complete the 4th palace.

Fool and Magician are automatic. Don't worry about those.

Other than that, you're doing well. That's good progress given you're late in third palace. What are your social stats? You may want to consider some time raising them now. It's good to go into the summer holiday with everything at 3 and exit it with everything at 4. Hanged Man unlocks at level 4 Guts.

The deadline for most confidants is mid-December without the Royal content (actually 22 December, but you have exams for a week before that). If you unlock the Royal content, it's very early February. The exceptions are Councillor, Faith and Justice, which I've already covered, plus Temperence and Sun, which expire in mid-November (regardless of Royal content).

If it looks like you're not going to finish hem all, then the ones I'd really recommend (beyond the ones needed for the Royal content), other than party members, are Devil, Fortune, Temperence, Sun and Heirophant. Their stories interact most strongly with the game's ending.

Kindness and guts at 2, the rest at 3. Iíll hit the burger place again. My only part time job is at beef bowl, best to try others?

    Thanks for all your help.

@Armoured_Bear The part time jobs are only marginally needed in Royal. 2 shifts at beef bowl, 2 shifts at the flower shop and 2 shifts at the convenience store and you're good. That's needed to unlock a few (optional) Mementos missions.

Guts is a bit of a pain to level because other than DVDs and (later) games, there's nothing you can do to level it on the nights you're confined to LeBlanc. For now, Big Bang Burger is your best bet.

Hmm, can't get temperance, I never can make a call, the Friday and Saturdays keep skipping the ealier part of the evening.
Now about to start the school holidays (just had the assembly and am outside Futaba's palace). Have I missed the chance?
I have charm and one other at 4 and the rest at 3 so that seems fine.

@Armoured_Bear Temperence needs school to be in session for certain ranks, but I think you can do 1-8 over the summer. You can do the first call on any night, provided you have Guts 3. It's only after that it's limited to Fridays and Saturdays.

Ok, I'll try again, maybe all the nights I tried were those when you can't leave the cafe (so late night). Moragana just says "why do you want to use an old thing like that" or words to that effect.

I've just got to the end of December in royal and I've got all stats and confidants completed. Had quite a few spare days left. Let's see what the new content like then!

@Wavey Having 100% confidanted both the base game and Royal, I'm pretty sure that it's objectively easier in Royal, even accounting for the fact I was more familiar with the various tricks second time aroumd.

@Rogueywon Yeh I agree. In the original I didn't get to max a couple but pleased I could this time. I enjoyed the fact there was a bit more wiggle room this time around.

Now I can fuse personas at a higher level than me, is there any reason not to? e.g. Im Level 31 and there's a fusion alarm, I can fuse Level 42 personas.

Finally there. Great stuff and closely keeps the game of the gen for me closely followed by Witcher 3.

Thoughts on the late game Royal content. It was pretty obvious from the start of the game Maruki was going to be the final boss but an interesting twist with Kasumi/Samire. I liked the alternate reality thing, with the protagonist almost having a Reading Steiner style ability to see that there was a world jump. It was good to be fighting someone that wasn't outright bad, just misguided. Enjoyed seeing the proper, unfiltered Akechi. He was an angry, angry chap indeed. Nice extra romance bits for those that picked a waifu.

Now, as Rogueywon did, on to FF7RE. Although might just wait til Days of Play on Wednesday to see if it gets a small discount first. Another extended cut in Catherine will keep me going til then.

For those who are interested (long post incoming), I thought I'd try to bring together all of the info on the "real life" inspirations behind P5's palaces in a single place. While there's some good stuff out there, it's annoyingly piecemeal and even the ANN article on it only really covers the first arc in detail. Be warned, obviously there are spoilers here, though I've separated them out by palace.

First Palace: Kamoshida - Two very clear inspirations for this one. The first, Hajime Komura, was a basketball coach who used physical abuse against his students, resulting in the suicide of a (male) student. Even after this was uncovered, the school continued to defend him. He was eventually convicted of assault and received a 1-year suspended sentence. The second, Masato Uchishiba, was an Olympic judo gold-medalist who went on to coach a judo team at a women's university, where he was convicted of sexual assault (receiving a five-year sentence).

Kamoshida is a fairly obvious hybrid of both cases, with the general pattern of his abuse (and the school's insistance on defending him) taken from Komura and the background as an Olympic medalist taken from Uchishiba. Following the Komura case, the Japanese education ministry launched an inquiry that found there were hundreds, probably thousands of similar cases nationwide, but this was basically tackled via the "Catholic Church" method of shuffling the offenders along quietly.

Second Palace: Madarame - This one's a little murkier and there isn't quite the same obvious inspiration as in Kamoshida's case. The most likely inspiration seems to be Mamoru Samuragochi, a composer (with some video-game credits to his name, among others), who falsely claimed to be deaf, while also putting his name to the work of Takashi Niigaki, who worked under him. Unlike the Madarame storyline, there's not a clear suggestion of outright abuse in Samuragochi's story, though you do have to wonder why his subordinate would willingly give away the credit for his own work.

Third Palace: Kaneshiro - A bit of a hybrid here. Kaneshiro's appearance and bling-bling lifestyle a fairly obviously modelled on a controversial entrepreneur called Tsubasa Yozawa. However, unlike Yozawa (who is no stranger to controversy) Kaneshiro is involved in fully criminal activity involving drugs trafficking and blackmail. His particular modus operandi of luring teenagers into carrying drugs for quick cash then enslaving them via blackmail seems to have risen to prominence in Japan in the early 2010s, with a particular focal point in the Shibuya area. Variants of it have now gone global and in the UK we know something very much like it as "County Lines" trafficking.

Fourth Palace: Futaba - Not much to say here. Medjed is Anonymous. They're not really the point of this arc, which is more about introducing and developing Futaba as a character, and they're by far the least developed of the Persona 5 villains.

Fifth Palace: Okumura - This is a fun one, with a very, very direct inspiration. Okumura Foods is obviously inspired by Watami Foodservice Co., a notorious "black company". Japan's white-collar workplace culture is notoriously demanding (by contrast, blue-collar jobs tend to be undemanding by Western standards), but black companies take things to another level. They're infamous for demanding hundreds of hours of unpaid overtime per month and using techniques such as blackmail to prevent employees from resigning.

The term "black company" originated in the IT sector in the early '00s, but Watami was the first company to really hit the headlines, after an employee committed suicide after working more than 140 hours of unpaid overtime in a month. Like Okumura, Watami Miki, the company's founder, was an "eccentric" businessman with a published business book and political aspirations. The scandal finished his political aspirations, but black companies remain active today (in gaming terms, Konami has been accused of being one).

Sixth Palace: Nijima Sae - This one isn't so much about Sae herself (she's not really a villian so much as somebody who's temporarily lost her sense of persepctive), as about the Japanese justice system. The arc covers most of the key points itself - the 99% conviction rate, the unwillingness of Japanese juries to question police testimony and unscrupulous prosecutors willing to use false confessions and similar means to secure convictions for career advancement purposes. This is one of those things you see pop up occasionally in Japanese media on an "everybody knows it happens, nobody likes to talk about it" basis.

Seventh Palace: Shido - A tricky one here. People have tried to connect Shido to various political figures. You could link his messianic tone to Shinzo Abe. You could link his thuggishness to Donald Trump. You could link his habit of abusing state functions to prosecute his enemies to Hillary Clinton. But none of them quite fit.

Straying into my own views for a moment, the curious thing about Shido is that despite being the game's main human antagonist, he's pretty much a blank state. He doesn't have much to say other than "I should be Prime Minister". He's aggressive and ruthless, but he has no particular ideology. The end of Shido's arc and the game's concluding act that follows it implies that Shido himself is largely irrelevant - the villain is the public and their desire to sieze upon a supposed saviour to make their problems vanish without them actually having to think.

Eighth Palace: Maruki - With this being new for Royal, there's less written about it yet, so I'm relying more on my own supposition here. Maruki isn't as outright evil or twisted as some of the earlier palace-holders, but the game still makes very clear his view of the world is distorted. While the trappings of his palace suggest a pseudo-scientific cult like Scientology, the actual substance of his arc seems to be more about taking aim at self-help theories like mindfulness, which encourage people to seek contentment despite problems and injustice, rather than challenging them.

One more thing on all of the above... Persona 5 is incredibly rare, being a Japanese entertainment product willing to talk about this stuff. Whereas Western media and politics are boisterous, noisy and shameless (for better and worse), the culture around these issues is much more restrained in Japan. In particular, there's a reluctance to pick at some of the scabs that Persona 5 highlights for fear of causing Japan to lose standing on the world stage.

It's a bit like a "family secret" thing. A lot of families will have some Creepy Old Uncle Nigel, who everybody in the family knows is bad news because he got raided by the police for downloading child porn, or was done for indecent exposure in Hyde Park or has an unfortunate collection of Nazi uniforms in his basement, or is SpaceMonkey. You might hear the stories about him whispered around the margins at family gatherings, but nobody actually wants to come out and talk about him where people might overhear in case it affects everybody's reputation.

So it's incredibly rare to see anime, manga or Japanese games touch on the themes that Persona 5 does. More surprisingly, it doesn't show up much in their news or domestic TV either. It's all very much regarded as Japan's dirty laundry. Which is not to say that European countries or the US don't have just as much dirty laudry as their own - they're just less shy about showing it off. If anything, a lot of this stuff has been even more buttoned down over the last couple of years (since P5 released) as part of the Japanese Government's efforts to polish their national reputation ahead of the Olympics.

This might give a bit of a sense of where P5's burning anger comes from.

@Armoured_Bear Yeah, even though it has the least social commentary, Futaba's palace is pretty awesome. And while avoiding spoilers, its last boss is an amazing fight.

Two warnings about what's coming up:

    1) You have a shitload of days taken up by special events in September and October, which may induce a bit of panic about confidant/social stat progress. If it helps, November and December have far more free days.

    2) The next palace is a big step up in combat difficulty.

Edit: Also, once you hit September, time to start making sure you hit the requirements for the new Royal content. So Justice to 8 and Councillor to 9 by mid-November, and Faith to 5 by mid-December.

I now have the following :
    Knowledge - 3
    Kindness - 3
    Guts - 4
    Charm - 4
    Proficiency -4

    Fool - 7
    Magician - 6
    Priestess - 5
    Emperor - 4
    Hiero - 4
    Lovers - 6
    Chariot - 5
    Justice - 4
    Fortune - 5
    Strength - 6
    Hanged - 1
    Death - 7
    Devil - 5
    Star - 4
    Moon - 5
    Sun - 6
    Judge - 3
    Faith - 5 MAX
    Councillor - 5

    It's 25/8 and I'm Level 36

If I have a Magician Arcana on me when the 'story' upgrades Makoto does it make any difference?
I obviously need to up Knowledge and Kindness but as far as confidants, focus on Temperance and Councillor when back at school and other wise Justice?
    Any other tips?

@Armoured_Bear I'd try to push Knowledge and Kindness to 4 by the end of the summer holiday, if possible. You can probably afford now to push a couple of Confidants to max, relieving some of the burden of keeping arcana on you. Chariot and Lovers are easy ones, as they have no gating. If I remember, Emperor's only gating is a check for Proficiency 4 (which you already have) around the mid-ranks.

Your Fortune now should be high enough to get affinity readings. These cost a bit of cash, but are well worth doing before spending time with confidants as they make you rank up even faster. Otherwise, as you say, focus on Justice as and when available (he's a bit erratic) and on Temperence and Councillor once school returns).

Having Magician on you never makes a difference with anything. It's an automatic confidant that ranks up at set story points and nothing affects it.

One other thing - you might want to start "bunching" some of your confidants that require Mementos missions now. By and large, the confidants in question have a Mementos mission gate in the rank 7-9 range. By getting them to the same stage at around the same time, you can then cover a big batch of the Mementos quests in a single visit.

Of the ones you're currently working on, the following have Mementos missions: Hierophant, Fortune, Hanged Man, Death, Devil, Star. Once unlocked, Temperence and Tower (which can be unlocked from late September, if I remember), also have Mementos missions.

You won't cover all of them in a single Mementos visit, but with careful planning, it should take no more than 2-3 trips for them all, which can be combined with the run through new floors you do after every palace.
