When the Downward Spiral was released, Kerrang! went nuts over it. I picked it up and was ultimately disappointed, as I didn't know what NIN were about, and was expecting heavy rock metal Metallica sounds.

Some years later, I viewed it in another light, and liked some of the tracks. Then I decided to take a step back and picked up Pretty Hate Machine. It was ok, but not raw sounding enough, and the finnal track 'ringfinger' has never worked for me, and really seems out of place on the album.

Next i would pick up Broken, which seemed like a mini album. Wish is quite good. The other album, Fixed, avoid.
Downward Spiral is something you really need to listen as a whole, in order. And it really is a landmark album in many ways - I love each and every track on it.

My favourite is probably Eraser. IMO it's only beaten by The Great Destroyer on Year Zero.

The Further Down The Spiral remix album had some great interpretations as well.

I forgot about that. I have both the UK and the US release's of Further Down the Spiral. One has 10 tracks, and the other 11 tracks, one has a 'part one', while the other has a 'part two'. All a bit weird really. I picked up the US version as I discovered a track on Youtube not on the UK release called 'Eraser (polite)'

I prefer Further Down the Spiral over The Downward Spiral

Looking forward to hearing the "audiophile" master of Hesitation Marks. It's supposed to be very bassy.

    Heh.

NIN closed the night with a slow and smoky cover of Johnny Cash's "Hurt," which earned nonstop cheers from the crowd. Reznor was soft as he sang the song's verses — making it the set's highlight.

It really bugs me that a shitty industrial metal band even dare to try and cover Cash's mastery.

Is that for real? Please say it's The Onion or something!

No, from Associated Press. To their credit, they did end up fixing it.

It happens a lot, I can remember arguing with someone in high school about it, back before you could just win an argument by googling it on your phone and ramming it into their face.

When a journalist (an internet journalist) can't be bothered to source their facts.... Using the internet possibly.... Things are bad. Dark times.

Tbf I liked the Cash version more. And it was probably more well-known than the original, so they didn't even think to check it.

    I can forgive them. :)

I never really liked Hurt that much, I can appreciate it as the closer to Spiral but it seems to be one of those songs that is synonymous with NiN, and I'm not really sure why.

Can't beat the Left Right album he did years ago. Best stuff.

The Fragile? It's not his best, but definitely high up there.

Loving the new one... reminds me a lot of The Slip crossed with Pretty Hate Machine by way of Year Zero. Really makes me want to dance too :D might see if I can get hold of the master audio files and play around with remixes.

Anyway, really loving Find My Way... reminds me a hell of a lot of Zero-Sum.

I've always loved NIN but the first single off this album just sounded far too much like 'The Hand That Feeds', structurally and melodically.
Eh? I don't get that. At all. It has much more in common with Survivalism or Capitol G, imo.

The new album is excellent, have you listened to his discussion on the deluxe version? Plays 4 quality instrumentals from the albums out-takes.. Just hope they play more proper gigs in the UK.

I really like the new album. Everything is perhaps the most upbeat NIN song I've ever heard, and it sounds good. And then there's still darker stuff, and some really good beats.

Fuck me, I just realised I downloaded the new album before the Expo and I haven't listened to it yet!

I think it's really good, and that Tarick is a big silly moo head.

Have you guys listened to the How To Destroy Angels album? I really like that, 2 or 3 tracks I can do without but on the whole very good.

The new NIN album is a companion to The Downward Spiral, even down to the artwork.. Yes it's not as aggressive or heavy but then Trent is in a completely different place with his life, his chat on the deluxe version is an interesting listen.

I like most of the album, except "All Time Low" reminds me of Lenny Kravitz, and for some reason "Everything" sounds like a song by The Cure to my ear.

It's interesting listening to them side by side. Musically they're obviously totally different, but also lyrically Hesitation Marks seems overall more optimistic (but then, anything sounds more optimistic compared to TDS!)

At a few points Hesitation Marks is almost a full-scale dance music album. I haven't actually listened to his chat on the deluxe version, is that the second disc with the remixes on it?

    @TarickStonefire

They're both tracks from Y0 (which is actually just behind TDS as my favourite NIN album, but then I really got into the ARG at the time as well).

Survivalism is track 3 (and the first single from the album). Capitol G is track 9 (and the 3rd single, though it was only released on vinyl). The latter is one of the most overtly dance tracks he's ever made after Perfect Drug.
