    Alreet,

So I got a macbook air and Im new to OSX, I've done my CV with one of the templates but on the third page where I get to my hobbies etc I cant get the cursor to start at the top of the page, I've been moving stuff in the columns to the side down to have some room for previous work experience so I presume It has something to do with that but it's driving me mad.

I dont even know how to take a picture of it and post it, because whenever I crop my name off the top of the pic in photo thingy, it's still fucking there when I open the picture again!

    Any help please?

    Thanks

My advice is not to put hobbies on a CV.

I don't ever see why hobbies are important. Ever.

"Oh, so you're looking for this job as generic middle manager, what are your main hobbies?"

"What does that have to do with the job?"

    "Well nothing, but..."

    "None of your business then."

    Truth.

Two sides, maximum. Preferably on one sheet.

Thanks for all the incredibly useful help, its actually 'interests' but regardless, I don't need help with the content of the CV, just with the layout. Ta xxxx

You cam take a selective screen shot. Don't have a MacBook anymore but I think it was cmd, shift and 3 (or 4). It gives you the tool to select the area you want to grab.

@mowgli cheers, tried that but you have to be a contortionist to do it, anyway I uploaded it to dropbox and edited it on my PC so here we are, I cant start at the top of the page, and there is no interests bit for the people saying don't put it in!

    Here

Or there's also a widget screenshot tool you can get fairly easily. Stupid question but there's not a header area set on page three that's larger than the rest or anything like that?

Or what happens when you go into the layout inspector?

@BillCityfingers I really need to read up on how to use the bloody thing, the inspector isnt saying much I've tried changing to type to all sorts like 'header' etc but to no avail, as I say I've just been adding spaces to the columns on the left to make more room for writing on the right, and it thinks page 2 is being carried to page three because when I press delete from where that cursor is it goes straight to the last word on page 2
  • Deleted user 29 November 2013 00:25:11
@INSOMANiAC It sounds like it's because you are adding spaces to your columns, as opposed to adjusting the widths in the inspector, therefore it's carrying over to the next page.

Second tab along in the inspector is your layout, should give column info?

it says columns 1 8.98cm on page one and 2 when I click the main boy of text, anything above where the cursor is and it says 'nothing selected'.

This is the right hand tool thing Im looking at yes? Says text at the top?

you know, I think it starts down there because the other two pages do but you cant really notice because theres a 'curriculum vitae' logo and text at the top of page one and two that isnt present on page three
    Cheers

@INSOMANiAC That's your style sheets your playing with now which will affect the character and paragraph properties of the text but not necessarily the columns. Not sure, been a while since I had a look at it. I can remember column info being in a pop-out "layout" dialogue box... probably not much further help, sorry!

ok cheers anyway, I sorted that bit, I added the 'curriculum Vitae' logo and name to the third page and it looks ok, but I dont really want that on every page, I can move the left hand column about find I just wish the main body was like a column you could move!

Anyway Im sure I'll figure it out

@INSOMANiAC Piss about with it. Create a few docs from scratch and see how it all works. You'll soon get the hang of it. :)

This 'more than 2 pages and its in the bin' malarky must a new thing. When I was interviewing 10 years ago, I got countless interviews with a 3 page (single sided) CV. Its all about how you structure it...and I had an 'Interests' section. :p

But I don't use Pages, sorry.

That was exactly what I was thinking about posting while reading the OP. No one cares about your hobbies at this stage, probably at any other stage either. They do care about you having the right skills, motivation and mindset to fit in the role. They also care about you taking care of yourself and be approachable, dependable and communicative. This stuff they can suss out on the phone /face-to-face

Actually, when I'm reading CVs I find its one way that helps differentiate them. Lots of the CVs I see tend to have very similar if not identical career paths and qualifications up to that point. So when you're short-listing for interview you can go "the rock climber" or "the guitarist"

No point putting crap like "I like travelling" or whatever though. So does everyone.
