I know I’m in the minority on this one and the work they’ve put into the game is incredible, but I loved the game on initial release for this reason and for the incredible sense of isolation it brought. It was classic sci-fi book covers you could explore and feel completely alone about, and once you left that system you were done, you couldn’t go back. I rinsed it on v1, completed the storyline and everything I started it again recently and the first thing it had me do was build a base and a teleporter, and started bugging me about forming a party and building a fleet, and I fell off it badly. But again, I’m in a big minority there.
Yeah, I guess there is a balance to strike between being an open sandbox and more guided mission structures. With all the updates there are so many systems in the game now that it does need some way to introduce them to new players and the main missions do a decent job of that I think. But some of the expedition missions require you to find specific "random" events like crashed ships, which are wonderful when you randomly stumble across one but can be a complete pain in the arse to locate when you "need" to. I guess that's where the community effort plays a role, as some helpful folks would build bases called "crashed ship here" and suchlike.

But yeah, I completely agree, it's that classic sci-fi aesthetic and sense of isolation in an infinite universe that's the core appeal for me too and some of the later features added have moved the game away from that a bit. I do love the base building aspect though!

I see the HDR is still fucked.

Apart from that I'm enjoying dicking around again. Although I know I'll do what I do every update. Reinstall it, fart about for 60-90 mins and then uninstall it. It does look very nice though (with the HDR off) and I may try get a bit further than last time I played. I have actually managed to leave the starting system this time which is a bonus.

See, that's why I'm waiting until winter until dipping in again, I won't want to do anything else other than play No Man's Sky for hours on end and it'll be a year since I last played it so would things will feel fresh.

Out of interest what's in it now? The last time I dipped in was when they'd just introduced vr support and base building.

I still have it loaded but I definitely need to be in the mood for it to be fired up.

A lot of things just got a fresh coat of paint, you can use some animals as mounts and I just got a multi-stage mission which uses the underwater exocraft.
