October is a bit crappy for me as I have the Halo 5 Guardians LE on order.

I have preordered the last few SEs despite the rapid price drops of the base game afterwards but after tales of the frame rate of the PS3 version and the PS4 being a complete unknown (plus I don't own one but I expect to have to buy one eventually...) makes the choice harder this time... Not looked for preorders yet either to check prices...

Edit - re the steelbook, I didn't like the cutesy Xillia one and this one doesn't look great. My ToGf day one looked nicer IMO

Yeah, I have Xillia 1+2 and Symphonia Chronicles CEs (and the Graces f Day One Edition), but I'm unsure about this one. I'll definitely be getting it on PS4, but October's not a great month with Halo 5 also coming out. I already have the Halo 5 CE pre-ordered for that month...

Ah balls, I'll probably end up getting it anyway.

Yeah October is starting to look pricey with this, Halo and Danganronpa whatsit on Vita...

I'll probably end up getting them all as I am foolish. Hopefully will hold off this and have as a Christmas present :)

Oh bugger, I forgot I had that Danganronpa game on pre-order as well.

Danganronpa will be standard edition as last two art books weren't great (got SE of first from NISA store (and got hit by customs) and got the artbook free with number 2 on Rice Digital. Not fussed about Halo as lost interest after first game (and never bought an XBone)

My concern about the PS4 release is if it will be a decent port as there haven't been too many JRPG ports to compare yet and they messed up the one that springs to mind, FFX.

I have a couple of Japanese Tales SEs too like ToDrSC and the PSP scrolly fighter one (saw it dirt cheap in Yodobashi Camera so went for it). Had a few preorders so have a few of the drama CDs too (never listened to one though...)

So I have to choose my format once SE is available to order...

Edit - I do have my Corpse Party Blood Drive physical preordered for October though and I expect Project Zero on WiiU to hit that month too so still have other games to order...

I read an import review of the PS3 version that said the game really struggled technically causing a lot of slow down and framerate issues, so I'm really hoping the PS4 port will sort this out. Of course, porting from PS3 to PS4 is far from straightforward as you're going from the Cell architecture to Intel, so there's plenty of scope for them to add all sorts of new issues! For me this a game I'll buy on the PS4 provided the technical issues are sorted out, so I'll wait for a review rather than pre-ordering.

@Cazalinghua That is what has worried me. The problem is that if I want an SE I need to order earlier. Has the PS4 version got a Japanese date yet?

With the dual format Ryuu ga Gotoku (Yakuza) games I just got the PS3 versions as I have the system and the PS4 ones aren't supposed to be too different (higher resolution and a bit smoother but same assets)

Had a very brief go of this yesterday at Hyper Japan. It was a very short demo to walk to a house and then fight a dragon, and you're very much dumped into the deep end, especially as it didn't explain anything at all in battle and it took a bit of getting used to controlling the camera in battle (not helped by the fact that there was no invert option in the menus). I managed to sort-of figure out how to use the kamui fusion thing.

There was a second world exploration demo that looked like it allowed you to wander around the environment and battle and explore, but unfortunately I didn't have time to try that one.

    Interesting preview article here.

    The good:
First Tales to have a truly open world

    The bad:
    Unremarkable characters
Looks lower budget than previous titles (in the writer's opinion)

For me it's a toss up between this and Dragon Quest Heroes and DQH is definitely looking more promising at this stage. Whichever I pick is will have to finished or abandoned in 3 weeks when Fallout 4 comes out in any case! And then December is Xenoblade Chronicles X and hopefully Persona 5.

    PC/PS4 details here.

Both the PC and PS4 version will run at a 1920×1080 resolution with PC supporting resolutions up to 4K. Full HD here we come! They also benefit from many other graphical improvements: the draw distance is 2x times what it is on PS3, with the PC version having a “far” option improving it even more. Shadows, anti-aliasing and textures also got upgraded. The PC version will allow you to switch between low, medium and high for all the preceding options.
It’s now time to talk about the framerate; all versions of Tales of Zestiria will run at a constant 30 frames per second. Before you run off to the comment section, hear us out! The Tales of battle system has always been an integral part of the gameplay experience, and changing the framerate proved to have profound consequences on things like: animation, balance, difficulty, and overall fighting mechanics tuning. We do this in the best interest for the players’ experience!
A bit disappointing that it's only thirty frames, but if it's locked I'll be fine with that. PS4 gameplay trailer coming soon, apparently.

So they'd linked up the animation and game logic to the framerate it sounds like. 30 fps is acceptable for this kinda game imo.

Yep. A shame, but I won't lose any sleep over it (so long as it is a solid 30!).

It sounds like getting any port was a bit of an ask as the team weren't interested.

The worst part (from my perspective) is the deliberate lack of Japanese text. From what I gather there'll be no Japanese PS4 version at all and modern dubtitling is so off-putting when you find yourself constantly disagreeing with the translation. Very much a problem for relatively few people, but still!

I took a gamble on the PS4 version as just got a system. Although this is the first Tales in Europe I passed on the SE for. Sick of Namco's overpricing then reducing the quality of our offerings compared to the US versions. (Also it didn't look hugely exciting and I have way too much stuff ;)

Re dubtitling, my Japanese is horribly rusty but I alsohave that problem sometimes. Tales of Hearts R was even worse with the renamed characters for a dub that never happened... I will have to give some of my JO Tales backlog a try and see what level the Japanese is in it. Will be easier than Ryu ga Gotoku I imagine... (remembers the boy band sidequest in 0... (and yes, I did get it right with a copy of 漢字そのまま DS楽引辞典 at my side somehow (cultural as well as language issues in that one))

I bet Namco are quite pleased about the Persona 4 delay as it's a surprisingly busy end of year for JRPG and related games. This, Disgea 5, Xenoblade X and Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel are all likely to be massive 40+ hour games and not many people are going to find the time to play them all.

I've never even understood that story about "locking your difficulty and mechanics to 30fps", like also say Dark Souls. Why would you do that? Doesn't that mean something's gonna get messed up if the framerate drops?

Got my review copy today and been playing it for the last few hours. Initial thoughts:

It's very traditional. The familiar real-time Tales combat remains, only this time without transitions. So monsters are visible on the field, then when you engage them the battle system kicks in. It's pretty smooth.

You can tell it's a cross-gen title. There's a distinct lack of AA on PS4, and some weird edge shimmering on edges and landscape. On characters, the cel-shading seems hit and miss - often the color of a character's skin actually extends past the cel-shading by a few pixels, which looks a bit odd.

Voice actors seem ok. Nothing spectacular, nothing offensive.

The first few hours are dominated by tutorial pop ups.

It seems decent though. It's very, very traditional; if you were hoping for something that progresses the JRPG genre you'll be disappointed; if you want something that ticks all the boxes and sticks to what you're used to, you'll be happy.

Does it at least look reasonably clean on PS4? All the images and footage I've seen of the PS3 version looks pretty messy in terms of IQ. As long as it looks fairly clean I'll be happy enough.

Oh, and AF. Is there any at all..?

I've played a demo of it, but I actually can't remember which version it was now :/

EDIT Also, your final para is expected. Tales of games are jRPG comfort food.

EDIT 2 Also also, it's coincidental you should post about this today, as I was wondering a few hours ago if anyone knew when reviews would be out for this. Is there an embargo?

I stopped playing Xillia 2 about ten hours in. I'm not sure why, I was actually quite enjoying it. I'd have to start again now.

I'm rethinking picking this up, it may be the last JRPG that gets released for the PS3 on disc outside Japan.

Everything else seems to have been downgraded to digital only and Persona 5 is so far off that the PS3 retail version is in danger of cancellation.

Am holding off to have this at Christmas and this paragraph makes me think it's going to be an absolute gem. Exactly what I want :D

@Ror yeah I banged a good 15 hours into Xillia 2 as well before stopping for absolutely no reason I can remember...I think it's because I completed the last of 50 hours on Symphonia the day before it was released, so in the end I think it was Tales burnout.

One for my Christmas list too, have Divinity and Fallout 4 pre-ordered on PS4 so can't see me having any time for a third large RPG (granted this is quite different).

I did the same with Xillia 2, played it solidly for about 20 hours then gave up. But I did go back to it and ended up finishing it with both endings after a 6-month or more hiatus. It's a good Tales game.

Yeah absolutely - when I moved back to London last year I took it with me as it is a game I fully intend on finishing as it was great. Also need to finish Hearts R (which I see you have played a lot of!) and think then I will have played all the Tales games released in the UK!

Well, other than Symphonia 2 but heard it was a bit poo?

Anyway, very excited for this :)
