The American's have bastardized it! The characters are all... different. Me no like.
/watches DVD series instead -
Marvin is definitely moving quickly in some of those shots. I can't imagine Marvin ever doing anything faster than a 'shuffle'. -

Dude, just....take my advice on this...just ....DON'T!
Someone ought to fucking shoot that voiceover bloke. The minute I hear his dulcit tones a movie goes straight into my "shit" pile...
Peej -
Hmm. Doesn't look as bad as I thought it would, but yes, I HATE that voiceover. Nnnngh. -

Registered 20 years agoGood choice for Zaphod. I kinda like Sam Rockwell as an actor, he's the right kind of edgy bastard you want for someone like Zaphod (remember him in Galaxy Quest as "the red shirt guy" ?)

Registered 18 years agoapart from the voiceover, not a bad looking trailer.
I looked it up on IMDB.com, and the director has only done one other project, Blur's 'Coffee and TV' music video.
Fingers crossed, may turn out to be a good film.

Registered 20 years agoI'm trying to like it, I'm trying to distance it as much as possible from "proper" Hitch Hikers stuff. Because it just isn't. Period. Adams is dead, and whether or not the project HAD his blessing when it was mooted some years ago, it's pretty fucking far removed from what I'd imagine Adams to put his stamp of approval on now. But like I say, he's dead so we'll never know. And that's a shame.
It's too action packed for starters. I don't remember reading Hitch Hiker's Guide and thinking "Ooh, lots of explosions, lots of spaceships whizzing about, lots of people doing impossible stunts over exploding stuff!"
It's too glossy. Call me "spoiled" because I grew up with and loved the beeb's wonky low budget series - but the damned thing looks too slick and glossy.
Marvin is so so wrong on so many counts. He works better as something slow, on the point of breakdown. Since when did you ever see anyone with chronic depression move that fast
I will go watch, I will detach it from the stuff I remember and love as being Hitch Hikers.
Some bright points. Simon Jones is in the credits \o/ - And I still reckon that Gilliam should've had a shot at this.

Registered 20 years agoAlso, any of the changes in the movie were all instigated by Adams himself - the new character (Havula Something - played by John Malkovich), the building up of the relationship between Arthur and Trillian element... it's all Adams.
So fair enough if you want to snub the film "because Adams wouldn't have approved" but you're wrong and personally I think it looks bloody great from what I've seen. As for Marvin, I love the design (making a robot with such a superiority complex so short is a nice touch) and I'm sure he'll move slower at other parts of the film just appease you

Registered 20 years agoShould've read This first shouldnt I...
I was kinda sitting there thinking "This film hasn't been in production for four years, Adams died in 2001, and this film's being released now so SOMEONE had a good fuck about with Adams' script - Yep, the bloke who wrote Chicken Run's screenplay had a good fuck about with Adams' script.
It's encouraging at least to hear that Adams' family are involved (his daughter even has a cameo) - but they underline most sincerely what I guess is blatantly obvious - it's nowt to do with the books.
But when you read a line like "The books were not the definitive vision of Hitch Hikers, no definitive vision exists" - that makes me just want to smash things.
Once again I guess it's a case that the imagined world of a book I've read just completely knocks the film on its arse. And perhaps with that in mind I oughta just not bother going to see it because I love those books and could just about put up with visualising bits of 'em as wonky BBC special effects (bless you Mat Irvine!) but I just can't get my head round visualising 'em as slick hollywood CGI and corny americanism-raddled gags...

Registered 20 years agoYou can very briefly see Zaphod's second head pop up in the trailer, unfortunately as the low bandwidth/picture quality of it is poo it's not that clear.

yay for my new acting career
the trailer did look a bit effects heavy which is partially concerning, but knowing marketing people, that could have shown most of the effects shots in the film just to make it look all exciting. i'm still hopeful that it could turn out well, with adams' earlier involvment. -

Registered 18 years agoWell I'm a huge Hitchhikers fan and it seemed that this was going to turn out to be a huge pile of crap not worthy of the name. But...
Most of the early reports I've heard have been pretty damn positive and I've got to say that it looks like a pretty cool film based on the evidence of that trailer. The thing about Hitchhikers is that there is no one 'proper' version of it; all it's incarnations vary from each other quite a lot. Personally I love the idea that we can see yet another version of the story - As has often been said, if you don't like it so what? You still have all the other versions.
Yep, I have to say I'm cautiously optimistic about this one... and War of the Worlds now that Mr Spielberg has said he's including tripods, red weed etc, etc. -

Registered 17 years agoI'm going to watch this with an open mind. I saw the original series and I loved it. I also listened to the radio series and loved it. I've read the book and I loved it - each of them for different reasons and I found each of them was visualised differently...it'll be the same with this film. At the end of the day, it's a different take on the basic premise of a story and as Adams' family have already said "there is no definitive vision"...basically guys just enjoy it as a slightly alternative version of events....much like the bible...or Lord of the Rings (how many re-writes has that gone through?) -

Book!=radio show!=tv show!=film.
It's not much of a surprise that there's a ton of new stuff.
To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of the radio show (heresy!) and love the books, but I will watch this at the cinema and love bits, probably hate bits too. -

Er, Peej; DNA has said exactly this. The radio series was obviously first and DNA has gone on record as saying it's his favourite version - but not because it's better than the others, but just because it kick-started his career. There is no definitive version, and the film will just be another entry in the HH canon. Personally, I'm really looking forward to it.
But when you read a line like "The books were not the definitive vision of Hitch Hikers, no definitive vision exists" - that makes me just want to smash things.
I can also thoroughly recommend the new printing of Neil Gaiman's "Don't Panic" and the official biography ain't bad either. -

Registered 18 years agoDNA mentioned several times how he liked the fact that the various versions of the story contradicted each other.
For example, in the tv series, The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe is on Magrathea (they get there when Shooty & Bangbang blow up the computer bank they're hiding behind).
In the books it's on Frogstar World B - Zaphod has just been in the Total Perspective Vortex, survived, punched Zarniwoop, found the model of the Heart Of Gold in his pocket which grows to full size, then in Chapter 17...
Zaphod ran onto the bridge.
'Computer, get us out of here.'
'Okay,' said Eddie, where do you want to go?'
'Doesn't matter. Anywhere. Wait, yes it does, take us to the nearest place to eat.'
'Sure thing,' said Eddie, and a massive expolosion rocked the bridge.
They then jump through time, but not space and go to the restaurant that way.
Despite all the variations though, there are certain, unwritten constants.
No-one but Stephen Moore can ever be the voice of Marvin.
Ford (and I'm not being racist here, this is just the way the character is) is a slightly shifty white bloke.
Zaphod on the other hand. Although Mark Wing-Davey has always done a fine job, I could easily see Zaphod being black.
In fact, bizarrely, the first time I met Razz at Rutty's film showing, I though 'He'd make a great Zaphod Beeblebrox'. Maybe it was because he looked like the guy who played him in thr Illustrated H2G2.
It's quintessentially English. It's, in it's own little way, twee. Any Americanising is simply going to detract from the overall feel.
I'm torn between seeing it because it the Guide, and avoiding it because I know I'll be disappointed and in all likelihood, cross.

Oneiros, I respect your views to bits, I really do...
But I'm with Boo on this one. Call us old fuddy duddies who don't like change but nah, it just ain't gonna float my boat no matter how it's dressed up.
I like a lot of different types of films but when I saw the trailer and read the FAQs on this film I just started to see the same old Hollywood formulas being trotted out...
"We need action" sayeth the producers, so the destruction of earth is turned into something like Independence Day
"We need a love story" sayeth the producers, so suddenly they fuck the book in the arse and make a huge thing of Arthur being "interested" in Trillian despite previously being knocked back but keep it smouldering on the back burner (fucking annoyed the hell out of me in the trailer when he shouted "Trisha" at her. What was wrong with shouting "Trillian" ?!?!?)
"We need humour" sayeth the producers. "Those two droids in star wars were funny, make Marvin funny!" - So Marvin will be funny but not in the way he originally was. If he fucking moonwalks in ONE clip I see, I will hunt Warwick Davis down and play bowls with the little fecker.
Sorry but there it is. Douglas Adams involvement or no, it all just looks too by the numbers for me.
Incidentally Boo, glad you mentioned the big illustrated guide. The woman in that - the one who "played" Trillian - NUM NUM NUM!!!!
