U2, what's the point? Page 2

    That,I wouldn't know anything about.

Seriously, there's more to life than moaning about stuff you don't like. I don't personally like Keane, but if you did I wouldn't piss on your fire because it's a polar opposite to my tastes.
Oh come on, you know I'm in work and I'm bored, you think I go home and really worry and think about this? I go home and I put on music that interests me and I don't think about U2 for a moment. However in work, when I have to listen to it, I tend to have to get rid of the bilge which has built up from listening to their music every day for too long.

I remember an episode that I found very distasteful. Bono was supposed to sing at a charity concert in Serbia, but forgot his favourite cap at home. So he sent for it to be brought in a plane rented especially for this.

In my opinion singing at charitable events and donating a few quid doesn't mean all that much. He could be giving a lot more even without giving up on this type of diva behaviour. Say what you want about Bill Gates, but lately he has donated almost everything that he has earned, saying that he doesn't really need any more money. And he doesn't, but there are a lot more rich people - Bono included - that don't have this atitude.

Sleep, sometimes you have to endure what you hate.

Bloke here plays some f..king Godawful Drum/Bass stuff. In the end we unplugged his speakers and hid them away.

May I recommend headphones at work?

And I have been for ages now, there was thread about how great U2 were a while ago and how everyone was looking forward to their album and the gigs, I didn't have a go then, or if I did it was muted.

Oh I had that for ages, now I'm right next to the speaker and short of ruining my hearing I don't have a great deal of choice. Usually I don't mind too much but today it's just grinding me down. Buble followed by Cullum, if they'd followed that with Melua I might have been forced to jump out of the window ;)

say what you like about U2, but their song 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' really encapsulates the frustration of a Sunday, doesn't it? You wake up in the morning, you've got to read all the Sunday papers, the kids are running round, you've got to mow the lawn, wash the car, and you think "Sunday, bloody Sunday!

    /also has to endure Buble.

/also had to watch Buble on Des and Mel. LIVE. Sitting with oldies (oi). We were the youngest in the audience.

/also had to endure Mrs Nem clapping like a Special Needs type when Buble talked about his looks.

/now has to listen to the damn CD. Lots.

    Who is buble?

I have an agreement with the wife. I don't listen to 'The Fall' when she is about and if she plays 'Maroon 5' whilst I am about the CD gets binned.

I used to work from 6 to 9ish every night and had to put up with Radio 210s 'Hot 7 at 7' which was the top 7 tunes voted by the audience and it was near enough the same awful tunes for 4 months. Wonderwall was number 1 every night for something like 8 weeks. Drove me totally nuts.

Michael Buble, he is attempting to become and easy listening star in the vein of Dean Martin or Frank Sinatra but just sounds like an insincere gobshite to these ears.

Aye, that's exactly the problem with me, unfortunately it's commercial radio all day and there is only so much one can put up with. I don't even want to start on Eminem!

    Yeah?

Well we sat in the audience and Buble says 'So I was talking to my Mother and she said ...Michael have you become better looking' and *Mrs Nem* claps like an excited seal. The *only* person in the audience to clap.

/cue everyone on the stage including Buble looking up.

/cue everyone in the audience looking over

/cue me wanting to be elsewhere.

I have it Kept on Sky+. Comedy moment.
  • Deleted user 16 February 2005 16:39:13
That's excellent, did she actually explain her compulsion to clap?

The reason I say I feel sorry for you is that I can leave all the stuff I think is crap at the office (apart from Embrace since my lady thinks they're brill) where as you have to listen to that at home. Which is a bit of a shame really. Just buy Ascension by John Coltrane as a come back to Buble ;)

/has watched Embrace perform in Studio3 also.

It was....alright. Bit too Coldplay for me, mind.

No, she didn't explain. I think she fancies him, so that kinda makes sense.

I'm of the same opinion, it doesn't do anything for me but doesn't offend me either. I know Embrace or a very marmite band anyway.

The best reason to buy someones CD, of course ;) Aren't you jealous, wouldn't you like to lamp Buble? (please say yes, please)

Cheers for putting a rather seedy image of Bono* in my head.

I'm now off to scoop my brain out with a spoon in a vain attempt to remove said image.

*BONO, argh! Even worse image now! hrrgrgrgh.

So, on the flip side, bands should continue making the same album throughout their career to please the fans? Like Radiohead should have just made The Bends 2/3/4/5 to please everyone? Instead of exploring something different, inventive and interesting.

Also I don't really care if they carry on or not, I won't buy their records anyway until they produce something that turns me on, which seems unlikely, if you really enjoy their music then good for you, I don't want to seem like a patronising twat. If you genuinely like what they produce then good for you. I just wonder why they don't want to change their sound or evolve musically.

"A funky regurgitator song" - Que ? Do you mean me ?

For the record (CD ?), I prefer the older stuff.

However my wife did covince me to get tickets for U2 in Cardiff so I'll see how I get on.

Anybody who thinks that U2 have not evolved musically obviously hasn't ever listened to their music.
For me the earlier stuff like October up to about the Joshua Tree was absolutely great stuff. It then got all popified and I kinda lost a little interest until their last two albums which imho have put them right back up there as the best rock band in the world. The new album is excellent.

Y'know the Ipod song that U2 did? Well, its been bugging me for a while but it has just dawned on me that it sounds just like a 1980's track by Blonde (I think)and part of the lyrics go "...and you keep me hanging on...". Exactly the same apart from where U2 cut and pasted a bit in a different key and called it a hook or a chorus or something....

/with Sleep & ssuellid on this one

My wife currently has Atomic Bomb on permanent repeat on the kitchen stereo, it's Abu Ghraib style torture. She's been playing it for a couple of weeks now non-stop. When will the suffering end?
